Classical practitioners approached it with both technical precision and ethical restraint, consistently noting that chart analysis reveals structural tendencies in relationship patterns, not predetermined outcomes.
The Spousal Palace — The Day Branch (配偶宮：日支)
The Day Branch (日支) is called the Spousal Palace (配偶宮) in classical BaZi. It is the most intimate position in the chart, representing the daily partner energy and the "seat" on which the Day Master rests.
Three levels of Spousal Palace reading:
- Hidden Stem Profile (藏干人物): The dominant hidden stem represents the partner archetype — what quality of person the Day Master naturally attracts. Direct Wealth hidden stem (for a male chart) = steady, disciplined, financially grounded partner. Seven Killings = driven, forceful, unconventional partner. Food God = creative, nurturing, emotionally expressive partner.
- Branch Relationship with Other Pillars: Year Branch (parental influence on relationship style); Month Branch (career-relationship intersection).
- Vulnerability to Clash (日支被沖): Day Branch clashed by Luck Pillar Branch = spousal environment undergoes structural disruption that decade. Annual flow clashing Day Branch = significant relationship event that year (positive or challenging).

When Peach Blossom appears in natal chart (particularly Day or Hour Branch): innate romantic appeal. When it appears in Luck Pillar or annual flow: heightened romantic activity and opportunity.
Excessive Peach Blossom (桃花過旺): Multiple Peach Blossom positions in natal chart. Classical: 桃花多，情緣紛亂 — "Excessive Peach Blossom, complex romantic entanglements." Associated with affairs, romantic obsession, or relationships that drain rather than support.
Marriage Timing — Three School Approaches (婚姻時機：三派各法)
Ziping timing (子平派): Marriage occurs when the Spouse Star is activated in Luck Pillar or annual flow — Wealth element arriving in stems (for male charts); Officer/Killings arriving (for female charts). Structure context matters: in a Direct Officer structure (female chart), when the Wealth pillar arrives (Wealth generates Officer), this creates structural conditions for the Officer/Spouse Star to fully function — often correlates with marriage.
Wuxingpai timing (五行派): Marriage occurs when the Spouse Star transitions from Ji Shen to Yong/Xi Shen in the Five-God classification — when the Day Master strengthens sufficiently to "manage" the Spouse Star productively. Annual or monthly flow Spouse Star element arriving within a favourable Luck Pillar decade creates peak marriage timing. Monthly precision: within a favourable year, specific months activating the Spouse Star branch are the most productive windows.
Mangpai timing (盲派): When the Day Branch is a vault branch containing the Spouse Star as hidden stem, marriage timing is linked to vault opening. When a Three Harmony completion occurs involving the Day Branch (most personal branch), this creates a major bonding event. Zuo Gong sitting pattern: Day Master sitting on a branch containing its own Spouse Star = latent relationship opportunity that requires vault activation to manifest.
Hong Luan and Tian Xi — Marriage Confirming Stars (紅鸞天喜)

- Spouse Star clashed in natal chart: Foundational relationship energy under permanent structural tension — relationships may form but face recurring cycles of disruption.
- Day Branch clashed in a Luck Pillar decade: Spousal Palace undergoes structural disruption — most commonly separation, divorce, or radical change in relationship structure.
- Spouse Star combined away in annual flow (配偶星被合走): Spouse Star "occupied" by the combining element. Classical interpretation: partner's attention or presence is diverted. Associated with infidelity, external pressures, or partner's circumstances consuming their focus.
- Mixed Officer and Killings clashing simultaneously (female chart): Competing authority forces create extreme relationship instability in the affected year.
Multiple Marriage Patterns (多婚之象)
- For Male Charts — Multiple Wealth Stars (多財): Both Direct and Indirect Wealth prominent in natal chart. Classical: 男命多財，妻妾成群. Modern reading: multiple committed relationships at different life stages, serial monogamy, or non-conventional arrangements.
- For Female Charts — Mixed Officer and Killings (官殺混雜): Both Direct Officer and Seven Killings prominent without one dominating. Classical: 女命官殺混雜，難守一夫. Modern reading: attraction to two fundamentally incompatible partner energy types, or relationships with fundamentally different archetypal characters.
- Spouse Star clashed in multiple Luck Pillars: Recurring cycle of relationship disruption — a structural pattern requiring conscious navigation rather than a fixed verdict.
Business Partnership Compatibility (合夥事業相性)
- Direct Officer (正官) strength in both partners: structured, rule-based collaboration; institutional and regulated industries.
- Seven Killings (七殺) well-controlled in both: high-performance competitive partnership; entrepreneurial and execution-focused.
- Complementary Ten God distributions: Person A's Hurting Officer (innovation) + Person B's Indirect Wealth (monetisation) = natural product-to-market pipeline.
- Six Harmony (六合) between Day Branches: natural operational flow, effortless daily collaboration.
- Six Clash (六沖) between Day Branches: friction in operational approach — requires explicit role separation.
Practical and Ethical Approach (實踐倫理)
- Tendencies, not verdicts: Chart configurations reveal higher probability of patterns — not deterministic outcomes. Human choice and conscious effort can and do override structural tendencies.
- Ba Wu Jin Ji (百無禁忌): No chart configuration is irredeemably incompatible. Understanding the challenge pattern enables conscious navigation rather than unconscious repetition.
- Verification before projection: Verify the analysis against the person's known relationship history before forward-looking assessment. Accurate past-pattern identification is the prerequisite for responsible guidance.
- Privacy and sensitivity: Relationship information shared in a reading is sensitive. Classical practitioners maintained strict confidentiality — a foundational professional standard.
