The Eight Structures — Ziping's Analytical Engine (八格精解)
The eight standard Chart Structures (八格 Bā Gé) of the Ziping school are not arbitrary categories. Each is the direct consequence of a specific Ten God dominating the Month Branch (月令司令). When the dominant hidden stem of the birth month, viewed as a Ten God relative to the Day Master, is identified, the structure is named. What follows from that naming is a complete analytical framework: which element is the Yong Shen (用神, Useful God), which elements support or threaten the structure, and how to assess the quality of the chart and its Luck Pillars.
The classical test for structure quality comes from Zi Ping Zhen Quan (子平真詮): a Qing Ge (清格, pure structure) is one where the structure is unobstructed, the Yong Shen is present and supported, and no hostile element disrupts the elemental relationships that give the structure its function. A Po Ge (破格, ruined structure) is one where a destructive element has entered and disabled the structure's core logic. Classical masters also identified the possibility of rescue (格局可救): a structure broken in the natal chart may be restored by a favourable Luck Pillar that removes the disrupting element.
1. Direct Officer Structure (正官格 Zhèng Guān Gé)
The Direct Officer (正官) appears when the dominant hidden stem of the Month Branch is the element that controls the Day Master with same Yin-Yang polarity. This is the quintessential structure of institutional authority, ethical governance, and systematic career advancement.
Classical verse (口訣): 正官佩印最為真，運到財鄉更稱人。 — "A Direct Officer wearing the Seal is most genuine; arriving at the Wealth period brings even greater success."

2. Seven Killings Structure (七殺格 Qī Shā Gé)
The Seven Killings (七殺) appears when the dominant Month Branch hidden stem controls the Day Master with opposite Yin-Yang polarity. Its structural purpose is to be controlled or channelled; uncontrolled Killings creates crisis rather than power.
Classical verse: 偏官有制化為權，英傑文章發少年。 — "When the Seven Killings is properly controlled it transforms into authority; heroes and scholars emerge in their youth."

3. Direct Wealth Structure (正財格 Zhèng Cái Gé)
The Direct Wealth (正財) represents earned, stable wealth built through consistent effort.
Classical verse: 正財清顯格中求，身旺財旺福無憂。 — "Seek the Direct Wealth in clear structures; when both self and Wealth prosper, blessings come without worry."

The Indirect Wealth (偏財) represents dynamic financial flows, speculative gains, business expansion, and the father archetype.
Classical verse: 偏財遇比莫相逢，縱有財源恐落空。 — "Indirect Wealth meeting Companions should be avoided; even with wealth sources, they risk being emptied."

5. Food God Structure (食神格 Shí Shén Gé)
The Food God (食神) indicates creativity, quality of life, physical health, and talent for generating both productivity and contentment. Among the most benevolent structures.
Classical verse: 食神有氣勝財官，先要他強旺本原。 — "When Food God has strong qi it surpasses Wealth and Officer; first ensure the Day Master's foundation is strong."

6. Hurting Officer Structure (傷官格 Shāng Guān Gé) — The Most Complex
The Hurting Officer (傷官) simultaneously indicates the highest intelligence and greatest talent for unconventional achievement while being most susceptible to self-destruction if mismanaged.
Classical verse: 傷官傷盡最為奇，若有官星禍不遲。 — "When Hurting Officer fully injures the Officer, the result is most remarkable; but if Officer Star remains, disaster comes swiftly."
Zi Ping Zhen Quan identifies six sub-types by Day Master element:

Universal rules: 傷官佩印 (HO wearing Seal) = most stable; 傷官生財 (HO generating Wealth) = channelled output; 傷官見官 = disaster for all types except Metal-Water with Seal.
7. Direct Seal Structure (正印格 Zhèng Yìn Gé)
The Direct Seal (正印) is the structure of scholarship, institutional backing, maternal support, and authoritative knowledge.
Classical verse: 印綬相生逢官星，名揚四海播芳聲。 — "When the Seal in mutual generation meets the Officer Star, fame spreads across the four seas."

8. Indirect Seal Structure (偏印格 Piān Yìn Gé) — The Owl
The Indirect Seal (偏印 / Owl 梟神) indicates specialised, esoteric, or unconventional knowledge and strategic self-isolation.
Classical verse: 梟神見食主傷殘，除非偏財方可安。 — "The Owl Spirit meeting Food God portends harm; only Indirect Wealth can bring peace."

The Structure Rescue Principle (格局可救)
A broken structure (破格) can be rescued by a Luck Pillar that removes the disrupting element:
- Direct Officer broken by Hurting Officer → Seal pillar controls Hurting Officer → structure restored that decade. Classical: 傷官有印，不為破格.
- Food God broken by Indirect Seal → Indirect Wealth pillar attacks Indirect Seal → Food God's function restored.
- Direct Wealth broken by Rob Wealth → Officer pillar controls Rob Wealth → Wealth structure rescued.
