Annual and Monthly Flow Analysis (流年流月)
Annual Flow (流年) and Monthly Flow (流月) are the most granular timing layers in BaZi. While the Luck Pillar establishes the decade-level climate, the annual and monthly flows provide the specific events, triggers, and opportunities within that climate. Mastery of this layer is what transforms a BaZi practitioner from a structural analyst into a genuine event-timing professional.
The Three-Layer Timing Architecture (三層時間結構)
BaZi timing operates across three nested layers, each progressively more granular:
- Natal Chart (命盤): The fixed script. The structural blueprint established at birth. Cannot be changed; defines the range of possible experiences.
- Luck Pillar (大運): Ten-year chapters. The stage on which the chart's story unfolds. Determines what era of life we are in and what elemental climate dominates.
- Annual Flow (流年) and Monthly Flow (流月): The actors and events. The specific GanZhi of each year and month interact with both the natal chart and the current Luck Pillar to generate the specific experiences of a given period.
Classical metaphor: "The natal chart is the river's course (河道). The Luck Pillar is the season's water volume (水量). The annual flow is the rock thrown into the water that creates the ripple (波紋)."
Five-Step Annual Flow Assessment (流年五步分析法)
- Step 1 — Identify the Annual GanZhi: Each year in the Chinese calendar corresponds to a specific Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch combination. For 2024: Jia Chen (甲辰). For 2025: Yi Si (乙巳). For 2026: Bing Wu (丙午).
- Step 2 — Assess Annual Stem vs Natal Stems: Does the annual stem combine, clash, or have a production relationship with the natal stems (especially the Day Stem and Month Stem)? An annual stem that combines with the Day Stem indicates a year of significant personal connection — new relationships, alliances, or transformation of personal identity.
- Step 3 — Assess Annual Branch vs Natal Branches: Does the annual branch form a Six Harmony, Three Harmony, Six Clash, Three Penalty, or Six Harm with any natal branch? A Three Harmony completion triggers major structural shifts; a Clash to the Day Branch disturbs the domestic and relational environment.
- Step 4 — Identify the Annual Ten God: What Ten God does the annual stem/branch represent relative to the Day Master? An annual Direct Officer year for a chart with an established Officer structure: career advancement opportunity. An annual Hurting Officer year for an Officer-structure chart: career disruption or authority conflict.
- Step 5 — Synthesise Annual Flow with Current Luck Pillar: The annual flow operates within the context of the current Luck Pillar. A favourable annual flow within a favourable Luck Pillar produces peak results. A favourable annual flow within an unfavourable Luck Pillar provides temporary relief but does not transform the fundamental decade.
Annual Flow and Luck Pillar Interaction (流年大運交互)
The most powerful timing events occur when the annual flow completes a Three Harmony frame that was partially formed by the Luck Pillar:
Example: Natal chart has Yin (寅) in the Year Branch. Current Luck Pillar brings Wu (午). Annual flow year brings Xu (戌). The three branches — Yin, Wu, Xu — complete the full Fire frame (寅午戌火局). This year triggers the full activation of Fire energy in the chart. If Fire is the Yong Shen (e.g., Fire is the Wealth element for a Metal Day Master), this is typically a year of major career recognition, financial windfall, or fame.
Conversely, if the annual flow brings a branch that Clashes the Luck Pillar branch: the decade's structural support is disrupted, creating a turbulent year within an otherwise stable decade.
Monthly Flow Analysis (流月細分)
The monthly flow applies the same analytical logic at a finer scale. Monthly flows are most valuable for:
- Event Timing within a Significant Year: If the annual analysis identifies a year of major career change, the monthly flow narrows down which specific month the transition will crystallise.
- Health Window Identification: Months where the monthly flow clashes the Day Master's health-associated branches (especially Wealth Tomb months for financial stress, or Resource-attacking months for health issues).
- Relationship Windows: Monthly flows that form Six Harmonies with the Day Branch (Spousal Palace) mark peak periods for meeting romantic partners or deepening existing relationships.
The Four Major Annual Trigger Patterns (四大流年觸發型)
- Structure Activation (格局成立): The annual flow brings the element that completes the chart's primary structure. Example: a Direct Officer chart where the Officer element was partial in the natal chart — the annual flow in Officer element year activates the full structure. Career breakthrough, official recognition.
- Yong Shen Combination (用神被合): The annual flow combines with the Yong Shen element, temporarily "locking it up" through a Heavenly Stem Combination. The Yong Shen is too absorbed in the combination to perform its function. Career stagnation, blocked progress despite apparent opportunity.
- Ji Shen Removal (忌神被沖): The annual flow Clashes the Ji Shen (unfavourable element) in the natal chart, dispersing the obstacle. This is one of the most powerful positive patterns — the chronic obstacle is removed. Major breakthrough in the domain the Ji Shen was blocking.
- Yong Shen Attacked (用神受沖): The annual flow Clashes the Yong Shen or its supporting roots. If the Yong Shen loses its root, the chart structure weakens. Career, health, or relationship loss depending on which Ten God the Yong Shen represents.
Worked Case — A Year of Promotion
To ground this in practice, consider a person with: Geng Metal Day Master, Direct Officer structure (Yi Wood as Officer in Month Branch Mao), current Luck Pillar in Wealth (Ding Fire — Indirect Wealth), and the annual year is Jia Chen (甲辰, 2024):
- Annual stem Jia (Wood): Jia is the Direct Officer relative to the Geng Metal Day Master. Officer year strengthens the chart's primary structure.
- Annual branch Chen (Earth): Chen contains the hidden stem Yi Wood (Officer) and Wu Earth (a Wealth element in this chart). Chen also forms a partial Water frame with Zi and Shen if present — check natal chart for these.
- Luck Pillar assessment: currently in Wealth (Ding Fire). Wealth nourishes the Officer structure — highly favourable decade for career.
- Synthesis: Direct Officer year within a Wealth-decade Luck Pillar, for a Direct Officer structure chart = career promotion, official appointment, or significant professional recognition. The year 2024 in this configuration is one of the chart's peak career years.
