Ten Gods — Individual Profiles and Yong Shen Determination (十神畫像與用神判斷)
The Ten Gods (十神 Shí Shén) are the ten elemental relationships derived by comparing the Five Element nature and Yin-Yang polarity of each natal stem or branch hidden stem against the Day Master. They are the primary vocabulary of BaZi interpretation, translating elemental physics into human experience: career, wealth, relationships, health, and character. This module provides individual profiles for each and explains the critical determination of the Yong Shen (用神) — the Useful God on which the entire reading pivots.
The Power Group (官殺 Guān Shā)
Direct Officer (正官 Zhèng Guān)
The element that controls the Day Master with same Yin-Yang polarity. Represents: institutional authority, law and governance, ethics, and responsibility. A strong Zheng Guan indicates a person with a strong sense of justice, leadership qualities, and talent for managing people. Suitable careers: politics, law, management, public service, diplomacy. In a woman's chart, Zheng Guan traditionally represents the husband. The Zi Ping Zhen Quan warns: "Zheng Guan fears being combined away (貪合忘官), clashed, or meeting the Hurting Officer."
Seven Killings / Indirect Officer (七殺/偏官 Qī Shā / Piān Guān)
The element that controls the Day Master with opposite Yin-Yang polarity. More aggressive and unstable than the Direct Officer. Represents: competitive pressure, strategic innovation, entrepreneurship, and risk-taking. Strong Qi Sha indicates talent for creative problem-solving, competitive industries, and calculated risk. Without control by a Food God or Seal, Qi Sha can manifest as aggression, legal conflicts, or health issues. In a woman's chart, represents a demanding relationship.
The Wealth Group (財星 Cái Xīng)
Direct Wealth (正財 Zhèng Cái)
The element that the Day Master controls with same polarity. Represents: stable earned income, disciplined financial management, practical approach to resources. A strong Zheng Cai indicates natural talent for business and finance, stability, and long-term wealth accumulation. Suitable careers: finance, accounting, real estate, entrepreneurship. For a man, traditionally represents the wife. Excess Zheng Cai can indicate obsessive focus on material wealth at the expense of health and relationships.
Indirect Wealth (偏財 Piān Cái)
The element controlled by the Day Master with opposite polarity. Represents: windfall income, speculative gains, dynamic financial expansion, non-traditional income sources. A strong Pian Cai indicates talent for investments, trading, and identifying unexpected opportunities. For a man, may represent the father or business partnerships. Requires Rob Wealth (劫財) stars to be absent or controlled to prevent wealth loss through competitors.
The Output Group (食傷 Shí Shāng)
Food God (食神 Shí Shén)
The element that the Day Master generates with same polarity. Represents: creativity, quality of life, contentment, health, and talent. The "star of happiness" — associated with good food, artistic skills, and a generous nature. Food God controlling Seven Killings (食神制殺) is one of the most powerful chart configurations, transforming aggression into productive achievement. Excess Food God, however, can lead to over-indulgence and loss of ambition.
Hurting Officer (傷官 Shāng Guān)
The element generated by the Day Master with opposite polarity. Represents: intelligence, rebelliousness against authority, artistic brilliance, and unconventional thinking. "Hurting Officer" refers to its capacity to damage the Direct Officer star (institutional authority). In the right structure (Hurting Officer generating Wealth; Hurting Officer adorned with Seal), it indicates extraordinary talent and success. Without proper structure, it indicates conflict with authority, marital difficulties, and erratic fortunes.
The Resource Group (印星 Yìn Xīng)
Direct Seal (正印 Zhèng Yìn)
The element that generates the Day Master with same polarity. Represents: academic knowledge, compassion, institutional support, and the mother's blessing. The Direct Seal is the Day Master's nourishment and protection — it absorbs the pressure from the Officer/Seven Killings and converts it into support. Too much Seal without Wealth to balance it leads to dependency, laziness, or scholarly pretension without practical application.
Indirect Seal / Rob Seal (偏印 Piān Yìn)
The element that generates the Day Master with opposite polarity. Also called Rob Seal or Dao Shi (梟神, "Owl God"). Represents: esoteric knowledge, unorthodox methods, isolation, and specialised research. Beneficial when channelled into unique skills; problematic when it becomes isolation or paranoia. Indirect Seal "robs" the Food God — when these two interact, the creative output of the Food God is suddenly blocked, indicating interrupted projects, broken promises, or skill that never reaches completion.
The Companion Group (比劫 Bǐ Jié)
Friend / Rob Wealth (比肩/劫財 Bǐ Jiān / Jié Cái)
Same element as the Day Master (same or opposite polarity). Represents: peers, competitors, siblings, and shared resources. When the Day Master is weak, companions provide essential support. When the Day Master is strong and Wealth is present, companions become dangerous Rob Wealth forces — draining resources, undermining business partnerships, and creating financial rivalry.
Yong Shen Determination (用神判斷)
The Yong Shen (用神, Useful God) is the single most critical factor in BaZi analysis — the element whose presence in a Luck Pillar or annual cycle determines success or difficulty. There are two main schools for determining Yong Shen:
- Zi Ping / Ge Ju method (子平格局法): The Yong Shen is determined by the Month Command's chart structure. For a Direct Officer chart, the Yong Shen is the Officer star plus its supporting Wealth or Seal. The analysis focuses on whether the structure is complete and unimpaired.
- Tiao Hou / Day Master Strength method (調候/旺衰法): The Yong Shen is the element needed to restore elemental balance relative to the seasonal context. A Bing Fire Day Master born in winter needs Wood fuel and fire support; one born in summer needs Water to cool and Metal to control.
Xi Shen (喜神, Favourable Gods) are elements that support the Yong Shen indirectly. Ji Shen (忌神, Unfavourable Gods) are elements that clash with, drain, or undermine the Yong Shen. Luck Pillars carrying Xi Shen and Yong Shen bring advancement; those carrying Ji Shen bring obstacles.
