1. The Iron Plate Foundation (鐵板教)
Liuren Fajiao is colloquially known as the Iron Plate Teaching (鐵板教). This title refers directly to the Three Talismans that form the Iron Shield around every initiated disciple. The metaphor is layered: Fixed Destiny (the unshakeable authority of the Liuren Immortal Master — like an iron plate, it cannot be bent or broken by external spiritual forces), Physical Resilience (the literal hardening of the practitioner's resolve), and Historical Identity (Iron was the metal of laborers, soldiers, and common people — Liu Min).
In Chinese Five Elements cosmology, Metal (金) governs cutting, separating, and protecting. The Three Talismans represent Metal's Yin application — they are the shield wall of the practitioner's energetic body before the offensive tools of later degrees are learned.
2. The Three Primary Talismans (三符之義)
These talismans are the first to be entered (入符) into the disciple's body during the Guojiao (過教 — Passing the Teaching) ceremony. Each targets a different layer of the practitioner's being, together forming a complete three-layer shield.
| Talisman | Chinese | Layer Protected | Primary Function |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iron Plate Fu | 鐵板符 | The Physical Body (形體) | Creates an energetic shell around the body; prevents external sha from penetrating the skin and entering the organs |
| Iron Cow Fu | 鐵牛符 | The Spirit-Essence (精神) | Internal strength; resilience against spirit possession, psychic drain, and internal trauma; anchors the Three Souls (三魂) |
| Copper Skin Fu | 銅皮符 | The Authority Layer (法身) | External shielding of the practitioner's ritual authority; ensures that commands issued are recognized and honored by spiritual forces |
Why Three and Not One? Protection in Liuren Fajiao is modeled on the Three Powers (三才 — Heaven, Earth, Human). A single talisman can only address one layer of being. All three must be active simultaneously for complete protection.
3. Entry at the Guojiao Ceremony (過教入符)
- Preparation (齋戒): The disciple observes a period of dietary restriction and abstention from polluting environments (minimum 3 days).
- Invocation of Witnesses: The Master formally requests the presence of the Ancestral Masters (祖師) as spiritual witnesses.
- Fengshen (封身 — Body Sealing): The Master traces specific Flower Characters across the disciple's body.
- Consumption (服符): The Three Talismans are written on bamboo paper with cinnabar, burned, and the ashes dissolved in Fa Water. The disciple drinks this mixture.
- Guojue (過訣 — Oral Transmission): The secret activation sounds are transmitted from Master to disciple.
4. Materials, Maintenance, and Renewal (材料與維護)
The Three Talismans are not permanent fixtures — they must be periodically renewed. Annual Renewal Rite refreshes and reinforces the Three Talisman protection; clears accumulated sha. After any major exorcism or spiritual combat, a post-heavy-case renewal is required.
