Midpoints & Graphic Ephemeris (中點結構與圖象星曆)

90-Degree Midpoint Dial
The 90-degree midpoint dial compressing hard aspects into visual proximity

The midpoint system — developed primarily by Reinhold Ebertin (1901–1988) under the name Cosmobiology — is one of the most precise and powerful techniques in Western astrology. It identifies the exact degree where the energies of two planets merge, and examines what activates that degree. Midpoint analysis strips astrology down to pure geometric relationships, often revealing dynamics invisible to traditional sign-and-house interpretation.

What Is a Midpoint?

The midpoint of two planets is the zodiacal degree exactly halfway between them. If the Sun is at 10° Aries and the Moon is at 20° Gemini, their midpoint is 15° Taurus (the degree equidistant from both). When a third planet occupies (or transits to) this midpoint, it activates both parent planets simultaneously.

The notation is: Planet = Planet/Planet. For example: Mars = Sun/Saturn means Mars sits at the Sun/Saturn midpoint — the drive and aggression of Mars is channelled through the fusion of identity (Sun) and restriction/discipline (Saturn).

The 90-Degree Sort Dial

Ebertin's breakthrough tool: the 90° dial compresses the 360° zodiac into 90° by collapsing all hard-aspect relationships (conjunctions, squares, and oppositions) into the same visual space. On a 90° dial, two planets in square appear as a conjunction — making it immediately obvious which midpoints are activated.

The dial is typically a circular graphic with 90° of arc, and all natal planets are plotted on it. Any two planets close together on the dial share a hard-aspect midpoint relationship that merits interpretation.

Graphic Ephemeris (圖象星曆)

The graphic ephemeris plots planetary positions over time as diagonal lines on a grid (usually 45° or 90° scale on the vertical axis, months/years on the horizontal axis). Natal points are drawn as horizontal lines. Where a transiting planet's diagonal line crosses a natal horizontal line, a transit hit occurs.

The graphic ephemeris makes midpoint activations visually obvious — when a transiting line crosses the horizontal line of a natal midpoint, both parent planets are activated simultaneously. This tool excels at identifying timing for complex events that involve multiple planetary themes.

Key Midpoints and Their Meanings

Midpoint中文Signification
Sun/Moon日月中點Inner harmony, the marriage point, integration of masculine and feminine
Venus/Mars金火中點Passion, sexuality, creative drive, romance
Saturn/Neptune土海中點Controlled dissolution, illness, spiritual discipline, depression
Jupiter/Saturn木土中點Balancing expansion and contraction, career timing, maturation
Mars/Saturn火土中點Disciplined energy, potential for frustration, endurance under hardship
Sun/MC日天中點Life purpose, career direction, the will to achieve
Moon/Neptune月海中點Imagination, sensitivity, psychic receptivity, potential for confusion

Midpoint Trees

A midpoint tree maps every midpoint that falls on (or within orb of) a given planet. This reveals the full network of planetary pairs that feed into that planet's expression. A busy midpoint tree indicates a planet that is deeply enmeshed in the chart's dynamics; a sparse tree indicates a more independent energy.

Uranian Astrology / Hamburg School

Alfred Witte (1878–1941) founded the Hamburg School, which extended midpoint theory and introduced eight hypothetical planets: Cupido (group dynamics), Hades (past, decay, research), Zeus (directed energy, fire), Kronos (authority, mastery), Apollon (expansion, commerce), Admetos (compression, stagnation), Vulcanus (great power, intensity), and Poseidon (spirituality, illumination). While controversial, these points are used extensively by Uranian astrologers and have produced some of the most precise predictive work in the field.

Practical Application: Timing Events

The graphic ephemeris on a 90° scale, combined with midpoint analysis, allows the practitioner to identify exactly when a transit will activate a natal midpoint combination — often producing accurate timing predictions within a margin of one to two days. This precision makes midpoint work especially valuable for electional and mundane astrology.

Parallel with Chinese Structural Analysis

Midpoint analysis shares a conceptual kinship with the BaZi concept of structural interactions — combinations (合), clashes (沖), harms (害), and punishments (刑) between Earthly Branches create emergent dynamics beyond the individual elements. Both systems recognise that the most important chart dynamics often arise from relationships between factors rather than from the factors themselves.
