Transits & Timing (行運與時機判斷)
Transits are the most widely used timing technique in Western astrology. A transit occurs when a planet currently moving through the sky reaches a degree that aspects (or conjoins) a point in the natal chart. Transits represent external energies activating natal potential — the current planetary environment stimulating the pre-existing chart signature. They are the primary tool for identifying when specific natal promises will manifest.
How Transits Work
The natal chart is fixed — it is the blueprint of potential. The transiting planets are constantly moving, and when they form significant angles (conjunction, square, trine, opposition, etc.) to natal planets, they 'trigger' those natal points. The natal planet's theme is the arena; the transiting planet is the type of energy entering that arena.
- Transiting Jupiter conjunct natal Venus: Expansion and abundance entering the love/values domain. Often marks a period of romantic opportunity, financial gain, or creative flourishing.
- Transiting Saturn square natal Sun: Discipline and challenge testing the core identity. Often a period of increased responsibility, limitation, or necessary restructuring — difficult but growth-producing.
- Transiting Pluto conjunct natal Moon: Deep transformation of emotional patterns and domestic life. A slow, profound process (Pluto moves ~1–2° per year) that may span several years.
Transit Duration
Transit impact varies enormously by planet speed:

The Three Passes
When an outer planet transits a natal point, it typically crosses that point three times due to retrograde motion: (1) direct pass, (2) retrograde pass back over the point, (3) direct pass again. The three passes form a coherent narrative: first encounter, integration and inward processing, final embodiment. This is one of astrology's most reliable timing principles.
Stacking Transits
Single transits are meaningful; multiple simultaneous transits to the same natal planet or life area create critical periods. A natal Midheaven receiving transiting Pluto conjunction + transiting Jupiter trine + a Solar Arc conjunction in the same year marks an exceptional career-defining period. Chinese practitioners recognise this multi-layer convergence principle in BaZi through the concept of 'annual star combinations' (歲運並臨) — when the annual stem/branch and luck pillar stem/branch combine to form a special structure.
Predictive Ethics
Transits do not compel outcomes — they indicate energetic weather. A Saturn transit to the 7th house does not guarantee divorce; it may bring a relationship to greater seriousness and commitment. The natal chart's overall promise sets the ceiling and floor; transits activate what is latent within that range. This 'inclination, not compulsion' principle is shared across all astrological traditions — Chinese, Vedic, and Western.
