Reading Talent — the 識人 Method (識人篇)

Among the most distinctive Mangpai applications is 識人 — reading capability and fit for selecting, placing, and developing people. The whole framework reduces to two axes, 德 (de) and 才 (cai), read through 體 (body) and 用 (use). It is an analytical lens for matching a person's capability against an objective, not a character verdict: here is not moral preaching but a functional body operating well.

德 as 體, 才 as 財官 (德才體用)

  • 德 (the body / 體): centred on 印 and 食傷, more broadly 印、比、食傷、祿 playing a good role — personality and charm, cultivation, courage, responsibility, and the practical power to get things done.
  • 才 (the objective / 財官): 財 is desire and pursuit; 官 is ideal, ambition, and platform. Their presence shows drive and aspiration — but 財官 too strong without a 體 to carry it reads as empty talk and an inability to bear responsibility.

Earning, in this school's phrasing, just is the process of using one's 體 to obtain 財官 — so reading a person is reading whether the body can actually reach the objective.

The four quadrants (四象限)

  • 有德有才: has 財官 and the tools to take 財官. Rare and valuable — core talent, but hard to retain unless given enough benefit and platform; if they can earn more by staying than by going independent, they may stay.
  • 有德無才: a strong 體 but weak or small 財官 — capability without platform, often feeling 懷才不遇. Worth cultivating when the company supplies a post and the leader values them.
  • 有才無德: abundant 財官 but no 體 to take them — many desires and ideas, but 光說不做, unreliable. The tradition advises against using this pattern.
  • 無才無德: 體 and 用 at war in a mixed, chaotic chart — generally unusable.

Hiring by body and platform (用人方法論)

For placement, the school compares 體 strength against 財官 strength directly:

  • 體 = 財官: usable — ability and platform are balanced and work yields achievement (still check the cycle for transits that break the balance).
  • 體 > 財官: usable — ability exceeds the platform; responsible and capable, though they may feel 大材小用 and criticise, so give them enough room.
  • 體 < 財官: not usable — small ability with oversized desire and platform; wants large things, shifts responsibility, prone to shortcuts.
  • 體旺 + 財官旺: high-value core talent carrying their own resources; can create great value but is likely to self-start — use, guard, and bind interests with real profit or equity.

The school also flags 偏枯 (severely lopsided) charts as a caution: they suggest bodily or mental imbalance and extreme thinking, and good fit also depends on the candidate being in a healthy cycle.

The boss-prospering chart and compatibility (旺老板命與氣場互補)

A 旺老板命 is read in two ways: the native's home carries 食傷 that generates wealth for society — their skill helps others earn — or an external 財庫 belongs to the 比劫 (the boss), and the employee holds the key to open it, helping the boss prosper. Beyond individual chart quality, the tradition compares the employee's 用神 and 氣場 with the boss or legal representative for complementarity: if the boss runs hot and dry (火土 too strong) and needs 金水, an employee strong in 金水 harmonises the team. The real test is whether the two charts' 用 and 氣 mutually balance — a reminder that 識人 is, in the end, a reading of fit between people, applied as a preparation and management aid rather than a judgement of human value.
