吃皇粮 — Do You Eat the State's Grain? (盲派公職命法)
One of Mangpai's signature consultation answers is whether a chart belongs in public service — civil servant, official, institution staff (吃皇粮, literally "eating the imperial grain") — versus private employment or self-employment. The 为心易学 course builds the determination in three stages: the palace logic that turns abstract ten gods into placed events, the root-finding that decides who owns each god, and the three structural paths that, when their ownership conditions are met, mark the state's payroll.
Palaces — Inside, Outside, Kinship, Limits 宮位
The palace is the bridge from ten god to event, read three ways. The main-line split (主線) is the load-bearing one: year and month are 家外 — society, the public, the state's resources; day and hour are 家裡 — the small world one controls and can put to use. The two power-points are the month (~50% of the chart's force) and hour (~45%), the other pillars ~5%, though year and month keep seniority. A 比劫 in year/month equal in power to the Day Master makes one a 二把手 (deputy) because it precedes by palace; stronger, one functions as 一把手 but without the title. The kinship overlay weighs palace ~55% against star ~45% (year = parents/grandparents/leaders; month = siblings/friends/colleagues; day = self and spouse; hour = children and late years). The life-limit (限) gives each natal character an eight-year field (year 1–16, month 17–32, day 33–48, hour 49–end) — distinct from the 大運, with the year as beginning and the hour as result, so a good year with a poor hour reads as an advantaged start declining late.
Roots and Relationships — Who Owns the God 尋根基／找關係
The ownership engine. For each 用 (財官) and for the method used to seize it, trace the root: 天干-地支 relation graded strongest-first as 祿 > 刃 > 本氣庫 > 余氣庫 > 長生 (長生 is only a friend-grade link, severed if 刑沖剋害 hits it). A god rooted at home (day/hour) is mine and easily taken; rooted outside (year/month) it belongs to the public/state; with no root anywhere it is common property — 「沒有根基的就是公共的，大家都可以來拿的」 — claimable only when a transit later delivers a root. Two refinements decide 公職: 共根 (shared root — 「我們都是一家子的人」) links a method to its target across the inside/outside boundary; and a home root damaged by 刑沖害 stays linked (it is still "my thing"), whereas an external root damaged more readily cuts the connection. The verdict rule: only by settling whether the 財/官 is mine or the state's, and whether the method reaching it also connects to me, can the chart be called 吃皇粮.
Path 1 — 化官生印 (Transform Office into Resource) 智慧組合
The officer is converted to 印 and the 印 generates the self — stable, scholarly, 印化官 / 殺印同宮 work, best on a slightly weak Day Master. Any one of three ownership conditions qualifies: 印 is mine with 官 bridging inside/outside; 印 bridges inside/outside with 官 connected to me; or both 印 and 官 bridge inside/outside. The constant is that 印 must connect to the self — 「印不管在什麼條件下都必須和自己有關係」. It fails on 傷官見官, 財壞印, an 印 so strong it transforms the officer away entirely (印化官沒了 → repair/service work, not office), or roots broken by 穿沖剋. Career image reads the officer's element (土 = land/real-estate/government earth; 水 = water conservancy; 金 = 公檢法, machinery, banking, hospital; 木 = forestry/education; 火 = education/power).
Path 2 — 食傷生財 (Output Produces Wealth) 事業編之路
Skill, speech, and operation produce the 財; this is the technical/教育/事業編 route. Here 財 must connect to the self — 「財必須和自己有關係。如果財和自己沒有關係，那就吃不了皇糧」 — while the 食傷 may sit entirely outside. Rank is read off the exposed stem: 透官/印 → 公務員; 透食傷 → 事業編; 透財 or 劫財 → 企業/國企. It fails when 財 has no self-relation, when the 食傷 diverts to 制殺 instead of generating, or when the connecting root is broken; if an 印 cleanly removes the 食傷, the chart may switch to a 化官生印 route instead. Doing-images follow the controlling element (食傷土 → real estate; 食傷金 → finance/machinery/vehicle administration; 木火 → education; 水 → hospital).
Path 3 — 食神制殺 (Food God Controls Killing) 能力組合
The control-based route, in contrast to the two generation-based paths: authority by suppression — stern, dignified, fault-finding, one-person-in-command, classically 公檢法 (with 配印 adding scholarship to give teacher/accountant/doctor). It qualifies when either the 食神 or the 殺 connects inside-and-outside while the control structure stays intact. It fails on 梟印 meeting and disabling the 食神 (梟神奪食), on a 殺 too strong for a weak 食神 (是非/官非), or on a damaged root. The course's strength-reading discipline closes the lesson: weigh each stem for root and palace support, and above all the month and hour — 「一個八字裡面最核心的除了日主以外就是月令；日主相當是皇帝，而月和時的話，月是最大的那個丞相」 (the Day Master is the emperor, the month its chancellor, the hour the final result).
Reading the Three Together 合參
The three paths are checked in turn against one settled question — does the chart's wealth/office, and the method that reaches it, connect to the self across the 家裡/家外 boundary? A yes on any path is 吃皇粮; the exposed stem grades the tier; the element names the field.
