Vocational Astrology & Life Purpose (職業占星與人生方向)

One of the most frequently asked questions in an astrological consultation is 'What should I do with my life?' Vocational astrology addresses this through a systematic analysis of the natal chart's career and purpose indicators, synthesising multiple factors into a coherent picture of professional direction and life mission.

The Three Vocational Houses

10th House / MC — Career and Public Role (事業宮)

The Midheaven (MC) and the 10th house represent one's public role, professional reputation, and the mark one leaves on the world. The sign on the MC describes the style of career expression; planets in the 10th describe the themes that dominate professional life.

6th House — Daily Work and Service (工作宮)

The 6th house governs the daily routine of work — not the grand career arc, but the day-to-day tasks, the working environment, and the relationship with colleagues and subordinates. A fulfilled 6th house placement means the person enjoys their daily grind, regardless of how prestigious the career title.

2nd House — Earning Capacity and Values (財帛宮)

The 2nd house describes how one earns money and what one values. Its ruler and occupying planets reveal the native's relationship with material resources and preferred earning methods.

Ruler of the 10th — The Key Indicator

The planet ruling the MC sign is perhaps the single most important vocational indicator. Assess its sign (the style it brings), house placement (the life area that feeds the career), and aspects (the dynamics that shape professional development). Example: MC in Aquarius, ruler Uranus in the 5th house — career in innovative creative fields, technology + art, unconventional entertainment.

Saturn's Role in Vocation

Saturn (土星) in vocational analysis represents structure, discipline, mastery, and long-term achievement. Saturn aspects to the MC or planets in the 10th indicate careers that require patience, credentials, hierarchy, or institutional involvement. Saturn's house position shows where one must put in disciplined effort over time. Saturn return (~age 29) is universally recognised as a major vocational turning point.

The Lots of Fortune and Spirit

Two Hellenistic calculated points are especially relevant to vocation:

  • Lot of Fortune (福點): Day formula: ASC + Moon − Sun; Night formula: ASC + Sun − Moon. Represents material success, the body, and circumstances that come to the native — what happens to them.
  • Lot of Spirit (靈點): Day formula: ASC + Sun − Moon; Night formula: ASC + Moon − Sun. Represents purposeful action, the mind, and what the native does — their intentional contribution to the world.

The ruler of the Lot of Spirit, its sign, house, and aspects describe the native's deepest vocational calling — what they are meant to do as an act of will.

Multiple Vocation Indicators

Most charts show multiple vocational indicators that may seem contradictory. The art lies in reconciling them:

  • MC ruler in the 3rd house + Mercury conjunct MC → teaching, writing, communication
  • Mars in the 10th in Capricorn + Saturn in the 6th → leadership in structured/military/engineering environments
  • Venus ruling the 10th + Neptune in the 5th → artistic/creative/aesthetic career with a spiritual dimension

Life Purpose Indicators

Beyond career, life purpose can be assessed through:

  • Sun: Conscious purpose — what one is meant to become
  • North Node: Growth direction — the qualities one must develop
  • MC: Public role — how one contributes to society

Cross-Reference with Chinese Systems

In BaZi, the Officer Star (正官) represents career, authority, and social position — analogous to the MC and Saturn. The Wealth Stars (正財/偏財) correspond to the 2nd house function. In ZWDS, the Career Palace (官祿宮) directly parallels the 10th house, and its star composition reveals the type of profession best suited to the native.

Practical Vocational Worksheet

  1. Note the MC sign and its ruler's placement
  2. List planets in the 10th, 6th, and 2nd houses
  3. Calculate the Lot of Spirit and assess its ruler
  4. Check Saturn's house and aspects to MC
  5. Identify the strongest planet in the chart (by dignity + angularity)
  6. Synthesise: what career themes appear repeatedly?
