Lunar Phases, Eclipses & Lunations (月相、日月蝕與朔望)

Eight Lunar Phases Cycle
The eight lunar phases from New Moon to Balsamic Moon

The Moon is the fastest-moving body in the natal chart, cycling through the entire zodiac in approximately 27.3 days and completing its phase cycle (New Moon to New Moon) in 29.5 days. The lunar phase at birth — the angular relationship between the Sun and Moon — is one of the most underappreciated factors in natal astrology, encoding a fundamental quality of consciousness and life rhythm.

The Eight Lunar Phases

Dane Rudhyar articulated the eight-phase lunation cycle as a model of universal growth and decay, applicable to any cyclic process:

Phase中文Sun-Moon AngleQuality
New Moon新月0°–45°Emergence, instinct, raw impulse, new beginnings
Crescent眉月45°–90°Struggle, breaking free from the past, forging ahead
First Quarter上弦月90°–135°Crisis of action, building, decisive turning point
Gibbous盈凸月135°–180°Analysis, refinement, perfecting, devotion to a cause
Full Moon滿月180°–225°Illumination, fulfilment, objectivity, relationship awareness
Disseminating散播月225°–270°Sharing, teaching, distributing wisdom gained at the Full
Last Quarter下弦月270°–315°Crisis of consciousness, re-orientation, ideological shift
Balsamic殘月315°–360°Release, surrender, prophetic vision, seeding the future

Natal Lunar Phase as Personality Signature

A person born at the New Moon phase tends to be subjective, instinctive, and pioneering — they act from gut feeling and project their inner vision onto the world. A person born at the Full Moon tends to be objective, relationship-aware, and sometimes torn between opposing needs (Sun-Moon opposition). The Balsamic Moon native often carries a prophetic or visionary quality, as if completing a cycle and preparing for the next — these individuals frequently feel 'old beyond their years.'

Eclipses — Super-Charged Lunations

An eclipse occurs when a New Moon or Full Moon falls near the lunar nodes (within approximately 18° for solar eclipses, 12° for lunar eclipses):

  • Solar Eclipse (日蝕): A supercharged New Moon — a powerful new beginning, often accompanied by endings that clear space for the new. The house containing the eclipse degree in the natal chart indicates which life area is activated.
  • Lunar Eclipse (月蝕): A supercharged Full Moon — emotional revelation, relationship crisis or culmination, secrets brought to light.

Saros Cycle (沙羅週期)

Eclipses belong to Saros families — each Saros series repeats every 18 years, 11 days, producing an eclipse of similar character. Tracking which Saros series is active helps predict the thematic quality of an eclipse season. Bernadette Brady's Predictive Astrology provides detailed delineations of each Saros series.

Prenatal Eclipse (出生前日蝕)

The last eclipse before birth — whether solar or lunar — marks a sensitive degree in the natal chart. Transits to this degree throughout life can trigger significant events, particularly when the current eclipse cycle re-activates the same degree family.

Progressed Lunar Phases

The progressed Moon (using secondary progressions: 1 day = 1 year) completes a full cycle in approximately 29.5 years. The progressed New Moon marks a major new life chapter; the progressed Full Moon marks a period of maximum illumination and fulfilment approximately 14–15 years later.

Parallels with Eastern Traditions

The Chinese Tong Shu (通書, almanac) tracks lunar phases meticulously for date selection, recognising that the quality of the day shifts with the Moon's phase. The Vedic Tithi (lunar day) system divides each lunar phase into 15 tithis per half-cycle (30 per full cycle), assigning specific qualities and deities to each — a more granular version of the same lunar-phase principle that Western astrology uses in its eight-phase model.
