Secondary Progressions & Solar Arc (次限推進法與太陽弧)
Progressions are symbolic timing techniques that advance the natal chart forward according to a fixed mathematical ratio to reveal the unfolding of inner development over time. Unlike transits (real planetary positions in current time), progressions are calculated from the natal chart itself — they describe the inner maturation of personality and potential.
Secondary Progressions (次限推進)
Secondary progressions (Sec-P) use the principle: one day after birth equals one year of life. To find the progressed chart for age 40, take the planetary positions from 40 days after the birth date and treat them as the progressed chart for age 40. This technique has ancient roots (Day-for-a-Year principle, known in various forms across traditions).
Key Progressed Factors
- Progressed Sun (次限太陽): Moves ~1° per year. The progressed Sun changes sign every ~30 years, marking major phases of identity development. When the Sun enters a new sign by progression, the entire life orientation shifts.
- Progressed Moon (次限月亮): Moves ~1° per month (progressed), completing the zodiac in ~28 years. The progressed Moon phase (New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon, Last Quarter) describes the emotional and developmental season of life. A progressed New Moon (conjunction of Sec-P Moon with Sec-P Sun) marks a powerful new 28-year cycle.
- Progressed Ascendant: Changes sign every ~20–25 years, shifting the outer persona and life orientation.
- Progressed Mercury, Venus, Mars: These inner planets progress noticeably. A progressed Venus changing sign from Virgo to Libra marks a shift in how relationships and beauty are experienced over years.
- Progressed stations (direct/retrograde): When a progressed planet changes from retrograde to direct (or vice versa), it marks a critical turning point in the life. Mercury or Mars turning direct by progression can mark a decade of important thematic opening.
Solar Arc Directions (太陽弧推進)
Solar Arc directions advance every chart factor — not just the Sun — by the same arc that the Sun has progressed. If the Sun is 35° ahead of its natal position (at age 35), every planet, Ascendant, and Midheaven is also shifted 35° forward. This creates a single unified 'frame' of timing.
The Solar Arc Midheaven and Solar Arc Ascendant are particularly powerful timing indicators for career and life changes. A Solar Arc planet conjuncting a natal planet by exactness (within 1°) marks a year of significant activation of that planet's themes.
Comparison of Methods
| Method | Speed | Domain | Strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| Secondary Progressions | Variable (Moon fast, outer planets slow) | Inner development | Psychological maturation |
| Solar Arc | Uniform (~1°/year all planets) | Outer events | Concrete event timing |
| Transits | Real time | External activations | Triggering timing |
Parallel in Chinese Astrology
Secondary progressions parallel the BaZi Luck Pillars (大運, da yun) — 10-year blocks that shift the chart's operative energy over time, revealing the unfolding life phases. The Day-for-a-Year mathematical ratio used in progressions also appears in Chinese solar term calculations (節氣). The Solar Arc method parallels the concept of annual fate pillars (流年) in ZWDS — a single offset applied uniformly to assess a given period.
Additional Progression Types
Tertiary Progressions (三限推進)
Tertiary progressions use the ratio one day = one lunar month (~27.3 days). They refine secondary progressions to a monthly scale. The Minor Progressed Moon (from tertiaries) moves through the zodiac in roughly one year, providing detailed emotional timing within the broader secondary-progressed framework. Some practitioners find tertiaries especially useful for pinpointing the month within a year when a secondary-progressed theme will activate.
Converse Directions (逆推推進)
Converse progressions and directions advance the chart backward in time rather than forward. The converse secondary progressed chart for age 40 uses the positions from 40 days before birth. The philosophical idea is that the moment of birth 'radiates' both forward and backward in symbolic time. Converse contacts often relate to inherited patterns, ancestral karma, or deep unconscious material. When a direct and converse progression align simultaneously on a natal point, the event is amplified.
