Astrolocality & Relocation Charts (星象地理與遷居盤)

Astrocartography Planetary Lines
Astrocartography: planetary lines (ASC, DSC, MC, IC) projected on a world map

Astrolocality — also known as astrocartography, locational astrology, or astrogeography — is the branch of Western astrology that maps natal planetary energies onto the surface of the Earth. Developed primarily by Jim Lewis (1941–1995) in the late 1970s, this technique answers a profoundly practical question: where in the world are different parts of my chart most strongly activated?

Astrocartography: Planetary Lines on the Map

An astrocartography map projects four lines for each natal planet onto a world map:

Line Type中文Meaning
ASC line上升線Where the planet was rising — personal identity, physical vitality
DSC line下降線Where the planet was setting — relationships, partnerships
MC line中天線Where the planet was culminating — career, public role
IC line天底線Where the planet was anti-culminating — home, inner life

Living near (within approximately 300 km of) a planetary line activates that planet's energy in the corresponding life area. The effect is strongest within 2° of orb on either side of the line.

Practical Line Interpretations

  • Jupiter/MC line: Career expansion, professional success, optimism in public life — an excellent relocation for career growth.
  • Venus/DSC line: Enhanced romantic prospects, harmonious relationships, social grace — ideal for finding love or partnership.
  • Saturn/ASC line: Greater personal discipline and responsibility, but also potential heaviness and restriction — good for serious work, challenging for leisure.
  • Pluto/ASC line: Intense personal transformation, empowerment, confrontation with deep psychological material — powerful but demanding.
  • Neptune/MC line: Inspired creativity or career confusion; spiritual experiences or disillusionment — depends heavily on the native's relationship with Neptune natally.

Relocated Charts

A relocated chart recasts the natal chart for a different location while keeping the same birth date and time (adjusted for the new time zone). The planets remain in the same signs and degrees, but the houses shift — different planets fall in different houses, changing the emphasis of the chart. A person with natal Saturn in the 10th (career pressure) might find that relocating moves Saturn to the 12th (solitary spiritual work) or the 8th (deep psychological transformation).

Parans (交叉角度)

A paran occurs when two planets are simultaneously on angles at a given latitude — one planet rising while another is setting, or one culminating while another is anti-culminating. Parans are latitude-specific (not longitude-specific like astrocartography lines) and indicate locations where two planetary energies combine in a unique way. Parans add a layer of precision that astrocartography lines alone cannot provide.

Local Space Astrology

Local space projects natal planetary azimuths (compass directions) as lines radiating from the birthplace. These lines extend in specific compass directions and can be applied to any scale — from room arrangement to international travel direction. A person's Venus line pointing northeast means that heading northeast from their birthplace activates Venus themes.

Parallel with Feng Shui

Astrolocality shares a deep conceptual kinship with Feng Shui (風水) geomantic assessment. Both systems evaluate how location affects fortune, well-being, and life trajectory. Where Feng Shui assesses the local environment's Qi flow using landform, compass direction, and temporal cycles, astrolocality assesses the planetary lines activated by geographic position. A comprehensive assessment could productively combine both — selecting a city via astrocartography, then selecting a specific property and orientation within that city via Feng Shui.

Parallel with Vaastu

The Vaastu concept of Dikpalas (directional guardians) assigns specific cosmic forces to each compass direction, mirroring local space astrology's assignment of planetary energies to compass bearings from the birthplace.

Caution

The natal chart remains primary. Relocation modifies house emphasis but does not change the natal planetary signs, aspects, or overall chart pattern. Do not expect relocation to 'fix' a fundamentally difficult natal configuration — it redirects the energy rather than eliminating it.

'The chart tells you who you are; the map tells you where that self can flourish.' — Jim Lewis
