The Ziping Reading Procedure — Structure First (子平讀盤程序:格局優先)
The Ziping method has a specific and deliberately ordered reading procedure that differs fundamentally from both Wuxingpai (Five Elements School) and Mangpai (Blind Master School). Understanding this procedure is the difference between genuinely applying classical Ziping methodology and inadvertently applying a hybrid method that dilutes each school's precision.
The defining contrast:
- Wuxingpai begins: How strong is the Day Master? Everything flows from that strength assessment.
- Mangpai begins: What image does this chart present? Host-Guest dynamics and vault mechanics are read from elemental images.
- Ziping begins: What structure has the Month Decree formed? The structure is named first. Strength is a secondary consideration that modifies the structure's management requirements, not its name.
This procedural priority — structure before strength — is what Shen Xiao Zhan systematised in the Zi Ping Zhen Quan (1779) and is what distinguishes a classical Ziping reading.
Step 1 — Construct the Four Pillars (起四柱)
Convert birth date and time to solar calendar equivalent; construct Year, Month, Day, Hour pillars. Immediately note: Day Master element, Month Branch, birth season, and whether the Day Branch has a Six Harmony, Six Clash, or Three Harmony relationship with the Month Branch.
Step 2 — Identify the Month Decree and Name the Structure (月令司令,定格局)
The Month Branch's dominant hidden stem (司令) depends on the solar term position within the month:
- Early in the month: Residual Qi (餘氣) of previous branch may still command
- Mid-month: Middle Qi (中氣) commands
- Final segment: Main Qi (本氣) commands most strongly
Identify the commanding hidden stem. Determine its Ten God relative to the Day Master. That Ten God's name is the structure's name.
| Day Master | Month Branch | Commanding Stem | Ten God | Structure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jia Wood (甲) | Hai (亥) | Ren Water (壬) | Direct Seal | 正印格 |
| Jia Wood (甲) | Shen (申) | Geng Metal (庚) | Seven Killings | 七殺格 |
| Bing Fire (丙) | Si (巳) | Bing Fire (丙) — same element | Rob Wealth/Jian Lu | 建祿格 |
| Wu Earth (戊) | Mao (卯) | Yi Wood (乙) | Direct Officer | 正官格 |
Jian Lu and Yang Ren structures: When the Month Branch produces the Day Master's own element, the structure is named Jian Lu (建祿) or Yang Ren (陽刃). Yong Shen is derived from Heavenly Stems rather than from the Month Branch's hidden stem.
Step 3 — Assess Structure Quality: Pure (清格) or Ruined (破格) (驗格)
Three diagnostic questions:
- Is the structure's Yong Shen present? — A Direct Officer chart without Wealth or Seal is structurally "naked."
- Is the destroying element absent? — Each structure has a specific breaker. If present, is a rescue element also present?
- Is the structure's naming Ten God rooted? — Stem without branch root is weak and unstable.
Structure rescue check (3b): Direct Officer + Hurting Officer + Seal = NOT broken. Classical: 傷官有印,不為破格 — "Hurting Officer with Seal present is not a broken structure."
Step 4 — Identify the Yong Shen from the Structure's Requirements (從格局定用神)
Yong Shen is derived from the structure, not from Day Master strength assessment — the key Ziping-Wuxingpai divergence.
| Structure | Primary Yong Shen | Secondary Yong Shen |
|---|---|---|
| Direct Officer (正官格) | Seal (印綬) | Wealth (財星) |
| Seven Killings (七殺格) | Food God (食神) OR Seal (印綬) — one method only | Day Master root |
| Direct Wealth (正財格) | Output (食傷生財) | Officer (財旺生官) |
| Indirect Wealth (偏財格) | Output (食傷生偏財) | Officer or Rob-Wealth control |
| Food God (食神格) | Wealth (食神生財) | Day Master root |
| Hurting Officer (傷官格) | Seal or Wealth — by Day Master element sub-type | Absence of Officer (大忌) |
| Direct Seal (正印格) | Officer/Killings (官殺生印) | Absence of Wealth (財不壞印) |
| Indirect Seal (偏印格) | Seven Killings (殺印相生) | Wealth to control excess |
Step 5 — Cross-Validate with Tiao Hou (調候驗證)
Apply the seasonal adjustment check from Qiong Tong Bao Jian. Integration protocol (Xu Leshi synthesis):
- Both agree: Structural Yong Shen = Tiao Hou adjustment god → doubly confirmed determination.
- Methods diverge: Structural Yong Shen governs career and achievement; Tiao Hou element governs foundational health and life quality. Track both separately.
- Tiao Hou element is Ji Shen: Climate requirement conflicts with structural requirement — genuine internal chart tension requiring case-specific resolution.
Step 6 — Assess Day Master Root (定日主根氣)
In Ziping this comes AFTER structure naming (unlike Wuxingpai where it is the starting point). The root assessment asks: does the Day Master have sufficient elemental branch presence to support what the structure requires?
- Strong-structure requirements (Seven Killings, Wealth): Day Master needs branch root to withstand the force it must manage.
- Follow patterns: absence of Day Master root is required. Root present = False Follow (假從).
- Seal and Officer structures: root strength determines how much pressure the Day Master can productively absorb.
Step 7 — Grade Luck Pillars by Structure-Pillar Compatibility (格局配運)
- Yong Shen pillar: Structure's requirements met externally → favourable decade.
- Xi Shen pillar: Generates the Yong Shen → also favourable, indirect support.
- Ji Shen pillar: Attacks Yong Shen → unfavourable decade. The Ji Shen's Ten God role indicates the disruption domain.
- Rescue pillar: Brings the natal chart's missing rescue element → highest quality Luck Pillar. Classical: 格局被破後逢救運 — "Meeting the rescue Luck Pillar after structure is broken."
- Stem-Branch split: Heavenly Stem active in years 1–5; Earthly Branch dominant in years 6–10.
Step 8 — Annual Flow Assessment (流年看法)
- Does annual GanZhi preserve or disrupt the structure? Ji Shen year within unfavourable Luck Pillar = compounded difficulty. Yong Shen year within favourable pillar = amplified positive effect.
- Three Harmony completions involving the structure's key element trigger the structure's promise or threat as concrete life events.
- Annual rescue: if natal chart has broken structure, annual flow bringing the rescue element temporarily restores structure function for that year.
The Speed-Read Formula (速讀法)
- Month Branch? → Name the structure (2 seconds)
- Clean or broken? → Identify Yong Shen and disruptor (15 seconds)
- Which Luck Pillars match the Yong Shen? → Grade the decades (15 seconds)
- Where are we now? → Current structural context (5 seconds)
The Fundamental Contrast: Ziping vs Wuxingpai (格局法與旺衰法之辨)
| Question | Ziping Answer | Wuxingpai Answer |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Name the structure from Month Decree | Assess Day Master strength (旺衰) |
| Yong Shen source | Derived from structure's completion requirements | Derived from balance/imbalance of Day Master |
| Day Master strength significance | Secondary — modifies how structure is managed; does not change its name | Primary — entire reading pivots on this determination |
| Luck Pillar grading | Structure-pillar compatibility (格局配運) | Five-God alignment (五神配運) |
| Classical authority | Zi Ping Zhen Quan (子平真詮) | Di Tian Sui (滴天髓) and Qiong Tong Bao Jian (窮通寶鑒) |
Xu Leshi (徐樂吾) recommended applying both methods in sequence: structure first (Ziping), seasonal adjustment second (Tiao Hou/Wuxingpai). When both confirm the same Yong Shen: doubly validated framework. When they diverge: structural Yong Shen governs achievement timing; Tiao Hou governs foundational life quality.
