Multi-School Integration & Synthesis (多派合論)
This is the capstone of the BaZi school methodology series. Students who have worked through the Ziping, Wuxingpai, and Mangpai workflow modules arrive here with three distinct analytical lenses. The critical insight of multi-school synthesis is that the three schools do not ask the same question — they ask different questions about the same chart. Apparent conflicts between school outputs are most often diagnostic rather than irreconcilable. Xu Leshi (徐樂吾), the early twentieth-century master who wrote extensively across all three traditions, remains the primary synthetic authority for this approach.
The Three Diagnostic Questions
| School | Primary Question | Analytical Tool | Output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ziping (子平派) | What Structure has the Month Decree formed? | Month Command → Ten God → Structure name | Structural identity: what kind of destiny |
| Wuxingpai (五行派) | How strong is the Day Master relative to season and chart balance? | Day Master strength assessment → Elemental prescription | Elemental map: what elements help or harm |
| Mangpai (盲派) | What element is performing Zuo Gong (做功) right now? | Operational force identification from Luck Pillar + Annual Flow | Operational driver: what the chart is currently doing |
Analogy: the three schools are like three different instruments measuring the same building — a structural engineer assesses load-bearing capacity (Ziping), an environmental consultant measures air quality and energy flow (Wuxingpai), and a facilities manager tracks which systems are currently running (Mangpai). All three are measuring the same building; none makes the others redundant.
The Common Convergence Case
When all three schools independently identify the same element or Ten God as the primary beneficial force, confidence in that reading is maximum. Example: Ziping identifies a Food God-Wealth structure with Wealth as the productive output target; Wuxingpai identifies a moderate Day Master needing Output and Wealth elements; Mangpai identifies Wealth as currently performing Zuo Gong in the active Luck Pillar. All three point to the same domain. Classical principle: 三派同指,信度最高 — “when three schools point to the same, the confidence level is highest.”
Three Divergence Scenarios and Resolution
Scenario A — Not a Genuine Conflict (Complementary Levels):
Wuxingpai identifies Wealth as Yong Shen. Ziping identifies a Food God structure — Wealth is the natural output of Food God but is not the structure’s naming element. Resolution: these are not contradictory. Ziping is identifying the structural mechanism (how the chart generates); Wuxingpai is identifying the elemental beneficiary (what element should arrive). Integrated reading: “This person monetises expertise (Food God structure) and benefits most when Wealth element flows naturally from their creative/productive output.”
Scenario B — Genuine Conflict: Follow vs. Structure (假從驗證):
Ziping identifies a Direct Officer structure (Officer from Month Command, Seal present). Wuxingpai assesses an extremely weak Day Master surrounded by Officer/Killing — calls for Follow Authority (從殺格). Resolution requires the False Follow Test (假從驗證):
- Check all four branches for any root (祿刃) of the Day Master.
- If even a single root exists → the Day Master has a foothold → Structure applies. Seal is Yong Shen.
- If zero root exists → Follow applies. The strong Officer/Killing element is Yong Shen.
Historical cases establish that most apparent Follow patterns fail the test — a single obscure branch root negates Follow entirely. Always verify before adopting Follow.
Scenario C — Complementary Timing (跨派時間法):
Wuxingpai identifies a Wealth pillar era beginning around age 35. Mangpai identifies a Wealth Vault opening (財庫開) at age 47. Resolution: both are correct at different resolution levels. Composite window: steady wealth accumulation from age 35 (Wuxingpai decade-level), with a landmark windfall or concentrated financial event at 47 (Mangpai event-level). Present both layers to the client.
Resolution Hierarchy Framework
- Verify against known history first. If a chart has verifiable life events, test each school’s output against those events before resolving the theoretical conflict. The school whose output better maps to observed history carries more weight for that chart.
- Apply the False Follow Test whenever Wuxingpai calls Follow and Ziping sees a structure. The test is definitive.
- Structural Anchor Principle: When in doubt, Ziping structure provides the narrative frame (identity), Wuxingpai provides the elemental prescription (treatment), and Mangpai provides operational timing (schedule). Each operates at its own level.
- When all three genuinely disagree: State confidence levels explicitly. Do not fabricate false synthesis. “Ziping suggests X; Wuxingpai suggests Y; Mangpai is currently showing Z — I hold moderate confidence in X and Y, lower confidence in Z given the conflict.”
Six-Step Integration Protocol
- Ziping Pass: Identify Month Command → name the structure → identify structural Yong Shen and Ji Shen.
- Wuxingpai Pass: Assess Day Master strength → identify elemental Yong Shen → run False Follow Test if weak DM is present.
- Mangpai Pass: Identify current Zuo Gong element from active Luck Pillar → check Officer/Wealth/Resource Vault opening years.
- Convergence Check: Do all three point to the same beneficial element? Note level of agreement (full convergence / partial / divergent).
- Timing Synthesis: Wuxingpai for decade-level arc; Mangpai for year-level event; Ziping for chapter-level narrative.
- Structural Narrative Wrap: Summarise as a coherent story: structural identity (Ziping) + elemental prescription (Wuxingpai) + current operational status (Mangpai).
Five-Step Cross-School Verification Checklist
- Has the Month Command been correctly identified and its Ten God determined? (Ziping foundation check)
- Has Day Master strength been assessed relative to both natal chart and active Luck Pillar season? (Wuxingpai foundation check)
- Has the False Follow Test been performed whenever Follow is proposed? (Divergence prevention)
- Does the Mangpai Zuo Gong identification align with known recent life events? (Operational calibration)
- Has the timing synthesis differentiated decade-level (Wuxingpai), year-level (Mangpai), and chapter-level (Ziping) layers? (Resolution completion)
When Schools Agree on Yong Shen but Disagree on Timing
A refined and common situation: all three schools agree that Wealth element is the Yong Shen, but Wuxingpai says the Wealth decade runs from age 38–48 while Mangpai identifies no Wealth Vault opening until age 52. Resolution: use Wuxingpai for monthly precision within the Wealth decade (when does Wealth flow most freely?); use Mangpai for discrete watershed event years (when does the Vault actually open?); use Ziping for the narrative-level transition (when does the person’s structural identity shift to reflect their achieved Wealth destiny?).
