Biography & Significance
Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche was one of the most influential Tibetan masters of the 20th century, known for making the Dzogchen teachings accessible to Western students without dilution. Born in Dege, Kham, he was recognised as a reincarnation of the great Dzogchen master Adzom Drugpa. After the Chinese annexation of Tibet, he settled in Italy, where he became a professor of Tibetan and Mongolian language at the University of Naples. He founded the Dzogchen Community (now Shang Shung Institute) in 1981, establishing centres across Europe, the Americas, and Asia, and transmitting the Dzogchen teachings in their full integrity to thousands of students. He was also a foremost scholar of the Bön tradition and Zhang Zhung language, and his research into Tibetan medicine, culture, and history was internationally recognised. His books — The Crystal and the Way of Light, Dream Yoga, Dzogchen: The Self-Perfected State — remain definitive texts.
