Biography & Significance
Padmasambhava — 'Lotus-Born' — is revered as the Second Buddha who brought tantric Buddhism to Tibet at the invitation of King Trisong Detsen. Born miraculously from a lotus in the lake Dhanakosha in the land of Oddiyana (modern Swat Valley, Pakistan), he overcame all demonic and terrestrial forces standing against the Dharma in Tibet. Together with the Indian abbot Śāntarakṣita, he established the first Buddhist monastery at Samye in 779 CE and ordained the first Tibetan monks. He transmitted the highest Dzogchen teachings to his 25 principal disciples, including Yeshe Tsogyal and King Trisong Detsen. Before leaving Tibet, he hid thousands of Terma (spiritual treasure teachings) throughout the landscape — in rocks, earth, sky, water, and the minds of destined disciples — to be revealed at future times of need. He is the patron deity of the Nyingma school and is depicted holding a vajra sceptre and skull cup, seated upon a lotus.
