Biography & Significance
Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche was one of the most revered masters of the 20th century, widely recognised as the embodiment of all aspects of a perfect Dzogchen master — vast scholarship, accomplished practice, poetic genius, and profound compassion. Born to the Dilgo noble family of Kham, he was recognised as a reincarnation of multiple masters and studied with numerous lineage holders before completing a 13-year retreat. He was a principal student of Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö and became the head of the Nyingma school. A master of the Rimé (non-sectarian) movement, he held the transmissions of all major schools and was the teacher of the 14th Dalai Lama, the 16th Karmapa, and countless other masters. He spent the last decades of his life restoring texts, transmissions, and ritual traditions destroyed during the Cultural Revolution, rebuilding Shechen Monastery in Nepal, and giving extensive teachings in Tibet, India, and internationally.
