พระแม่สรัสวดี
Saraswati
辯才天女
Phra Mae Saraswadi is depicted as an exquisitely beautiful goddess draped in pure white garments signifying purity and illuminated knowledge. She has four arms: one pair playing the veena (a classical Indian stringed instrument), another holding sacred scriptures (Vedas) and a string of prayer beads. She sits serenely upon a large white lotus or rides a graceful white swan, sometimes a peacock. Her expression radiates serene intelligence and creative grace, and she wears elegant jewellery and a white floral crown. In Thailand she is sometimes portrayed in Thai classical style with golden ornament.
Role 職能
Phra Mae Saraswadi is the goddess of arts, music, poetry, eloquence, knowledge, and sacred learning. She governs the flow of creative inspiration and intellectual wisdom, and is invoked by students, teachers, musicians, writers, and scholars seeking clarity of mind and mastery of their craft.
Thai Significance 泰式意義
Phra Mae Saraswadi is especially beloved among Thai students, who pray at her shrines before major university entrance examinations and the national scholastic aptitude tests. Wai Khru ceremonies at educational institutions are often conducted in her honour alongside the hermit sage Ruesi, and her image adorns many Thai schools, universities, and arts conservatories. Thai classical dance schools venerate her particularly, as she governs all performance arts, and traditional Thai classical music is considered a form of sacred offering to her.
Vedic Significance 吠陀意義
Saraswati is the third member of the Hindu divine feminine Trinity (Tridevi), alongside Lakshmi and Parvati. She is the consort of Brahma, the creator, and in Vedic cosmology she represents the sacred river of knowledge that flows from the infinite creative mind of the universe. The ancient Saraswati River, now mostly subterranean or dried, was considered the holiest river of the Rigvedic civilisation, and the goddess is the embodiment of that sacred flow of inspiration. Her festival Saraswati Puja (also Vasant Panchami) is celebrated with great fervour across India, Nepal, and Southeast Asia.
