Ganesha / Ganapati
象頭神
Phra Phikanet is depicted as a cheerful, rotund deity with the head of an elephant featuring large fan-like ears and a curved trunk. He typically has four arms — two holding sacred objects and two in gesture — and holds a modaka sweet in his trunk or one of his hands. His large belly is cinched with a serpent used as a belt. He rides or is accompanied by a small mouse, his vehicle, which paradoxically carries the great lord. He is often depicted in golden or red hues, surrounded by an aura of warm, welcoming divine energy.
Role 職能
Phra Phikanet is the elephant-headed son of Shiva and Parvati, venerated as the remover of obstacles (Vighnaharta) and the lord of beginnings. He is the patron of arts, writing, crafts, wisdom, and new ventures, and is invoked at the outset of every significant enterprise to ensure success.
Thai Significance 泰式意義
In Thailand, Phra Phikanet (Ganesha) enjoys extraordinary popularity, particularly among artists, performers, students, craftspeople, and business owners. Thursday is widely observed as his sacred day, and art institutions, film studios, and Thai classical dance schools maintain dedicated shrines to him. Thai students pray to Phra Phikanet before important examinations, and new buildings, shops, and creative projects are blessed by him. The Fine Arts Department of Thailand has Ganesha as its symbol, reflecting his patronage of classical Thai arts.
Vedic Significance 吠陀意義
Ganesha is one of the most universally worshipped deities in the Hindu tradition, revered as Vighnaharta (remover of obstacles) and Vighnakartha (creator of obstacles for the unworthy) simultaneously. According to the Ganesha Purana, he was created by Parvati from clay and subsequently given the head of an elephant by Shiva after a cosmic episode of decapitation. As the lord of Ganas (celestial attendants) and the deity presiding over intellect and wisdom (Buddhi), he is invoked by Hindus of all sects at the start of every puja, marriage, journey, or undertaking.
