พระพรหม

Brahma

婆羅賀摩

Creator

Phra Phrom is depicted as a resplendent golden deity with four faces, each gazing calmly in one of the cardinal directions, symbolising his all-seeing omniscience. He has four arms, each holding a sacred attribute: prayer beads, a sacred water vessel, a sceptre, and a book of the Vedas. He is seated on a lotus throne atop a large white swan and is typically draped in white and gold robes.

Role 職能

Phra Phrom is the four-faced creator deity who governs the cycle of creation and bestows blessings of good fortune, health, prosperity, and protection from calamity. As the cosmic architect of the universe, he is invoked for divine favour in all life's major undertakings.

Thai Significance 泰式意義

Phra Phrom is among the most venerated deities in Thailand, where the Erawan Shrine (ศาลท้าวมหาพรหม) in the heart of Bangkok draws millions of devotees and tourists annually. The original shrine was erected in 1956 after construction accidents at the Erawan Hotel were attributed to spiritual disturbances, and propitiation of Brahma ended the calamities. Thai people light incense, offer garlands, and commission traditional dance performances as vows in exchange for divine assistance, demonstrating the deep syncretic blend of Brahmanical and Buddhist devotion in everyday Thai life.

Vedic Significance 吠陀意義

In the Vedic and Hindu tradition, Brahma is the first member of the Trimurti — the Hindu Trinity — alongside Vishnu the Preserver and Shiva the Destroyer-Regenerator. As the creator of the universe, he is said to have sprung from a lotus that grew from the navel of Vishnu, and he fashioned the world and all living beings from primordial matter. Though Brahma commands immense cosmological significance, active temples dedicated exclusively to him are comparatively rare in India, with the Pushkar temple in Rajasthan being one of the most notable exceptions.
