Decade Cycles and Annual Stars (大限流年)

The natal Zi Wei Dou Shu chart is often called the 死盘 (fixed/dead chart) — it shows the full sweep of life squeezed into twelve palaces. To animate this into a living reading (活盘), practitioners overlay the chart with time-based layers: the Decade Chart (大限), the Annual Chart (流年), the Monthly Chart (流月), and the Daily Chart (流日). This multi-layered analysis transforms Zi Wei Dou Shu from a static snapshot into a dynamic instrument for understanding the timing of life events.

The Decade Chart (大限 — Da Xian)

Each person passes through a sequence of ten-year periods, each governed by a different palace of the natal chart. As the decade advances, the natal palace that serves as the decade's Life Palace becomes the central axis, and all twelve domains rotate accordingly. The Decade Chart presents the life situation for that particular ten-year period: its dominant themes, opportunities, challenges, and relationship configurations.

To read the Decade Chart: identify which natal palace has become the decade's Life Palace. What are the stars in that palace? What stars appear in its San Fang Si Zheng? What transformations are active? The answers describe the broad medium-term trends of that decade. While the natal readings still hold true as background, the decade introduces its own specific emphasis. Importantly, the Decade Chart shows where the decade's Life Palace is located, but also introduces flying stars — the major stars and transformation stars of the decade interact with the original natal chart to produce a complex overlay.

Annual Stars (流年 — Liu Nian)

The Annual Chart describes the specific events and energies of a single calendar year. Its construction is straightforward: note the Earthly Branch of the year in question and use the natal palace bearing that branch as the annual Life Palace. All other domains rotate from this anchor. The Annual Chart shows the small changes and ups-and-downs of daily life year by year.

Annual readings are not suitable for long-term planning — they provide insufficient horizon for major life decisions. However, they are extremely useful for understanding the immediate environment of a given year, preparing for potential challenges, or retrospectively understanding why certain events occurred.

Monthly and Daily Charts

The Monthly Chart is derived by counting anti-clockwise from the Annual Life Palace to the birth month, then clockwise by the number of Shi Chen (Chinese double hours) to the birth hour. The Daily Chart counts clockwise from the monthly Life Palace by the number of days from the monthly reference point. These charts are primarily used by advanced practitioners for precise timing of events and are not recommended for beginners.

Interpretation Principles for Time Analysis

The most important principle is layering: the natal chart sets the structural tendencies; the decade chart determines the medium-term environment; the annual chart provides the specific year's flavour. An event is most likely to manifest when all three layers align — when the natal potential, the decade activation, and the annual trigger all point to the same outcome simultaneously.

A key warning from classical sources: if structure and timing conflict, timing alone cannot rescue a fundamentally weak structure. Similarly, a strong natal chart with unfavourable timing may experience setbacks but will recover, while a weak natal chart with the best timing still cannot produce first-rate outcomes. This is the Chinese concept of 天時地利人和 (Heaven's Timing, Earth's Advantage, Human Harmony) — all three must align for optimal results.

Flying Stars (飛星) in Time Analysis

In the decade and annual cycles, certain stars are said to "fly" into the palaces, creating temporary configurations that overlay the natal patterns. When a flying star coincides with a natal star of similar nature in the same palace, the effect is amplified. When a flying malefic star overlaps with a natal malefic in the same palace — particularly Qing Yang (擎羊) or Tuo Luo (陀羅) — it indicates severe challenges during that period. Practitioners mark these convergences carefully when timing significant life events.

Practical Reading Sequence

  1. Confirm the natal chart is correctly calculated and all fourteen major stars placed.
  2. Assess the overall natal structural quality through the Life Palace San Fang Si Zheng.
  3. Identify the current Decade Chart: which palace serves as the decade Life Palace? What stars govern it?
  4. Overlay the Annual Chart and check for alignment or conflict with both the natal and decade configurations.
  5. Identify the specific question or domain — focus analysis on that domain's palace across all three time layers.
  6. Note any transformations (化祿, 化權, 化科, 化忌) active in the relevant palaces across the time layers.
