Auxiliary Stars and the Six Malefics (六吉六凶)

六吉六凶輔曜

Auxiliary and Malefic Stars (輔助煞星系統)

Beyond the fourteen major stars, Zi Wei Dou Shu employs two groups of supporting stars that profoundly modify the chart's quality: the Six Auspicious Stars (六吉星) and the Six Malefic Stars (六凶星). Additionally, Lu Cun (祿存) and Tian Ma (天馬) function as vital assistant stars. The Six Auspicious Stars — Wen Chang (文昌), Wen Qu (文曲), Zuo Fu (左輔), You Bi (右弼), Tian Kui (天魁), and Tian Yue (天鉞) — are generally considered supporting, though they can transform into sources of challenge when poorly configured. The Six Malefics — Qing Yang (擎羊), Tuo Luo (陀羅), Huo Xing (火星), Ling Xing (鈴星), Di Kong (地空), and Di Jie (地劫) — are feared because they hamper the prospects and effectiveness of other stars, but classical masters caution against over-emphasizing their negative aspects.

The Four Auxiliary Stars (四輔曜)

Zuo Fu (左輔) — Left Deputy: Yang Earth element. A firm, elegant, hardworking star that facilitates progress and assists the major stars it accompanies. Zuo Fu's positive influence is most stable and direct — it does not participate in Hua Ji (化忌) disruption and has no weak/strong positional distinction. It is especially valuable in the Life, Wealth, and Career Palaces. Zuo Fu in the Spouse Palace can indicate third-party interference in relationships.

You Bi (右弼) — Right Deputy: Yin Water element. Gentle, romantic, and fun-loving. You Bi provides the same supportive function as Zuo Fu but with a softer, more receptive quality. When Hua Ke (化科) transforms You Bi, it signals assistance coming from an unexpected direction. Like Zuo Fu, You Bi in the Spouse Palace can indicate romantic complications from external parties.

Tian Kui (天魁) — Heavenly Noble: Yang Fire element. Represents the Day Nobleman (白天貴人) — one who provides clear, direct, visible assistance. Tian Kui's influence is most active for those born during daytime hours. It brings opportunities, good reputation, and the support of male authority figures. After age forty, the traditional texts caution that Tian Kui's influence can reverse into minor obstructions; the protective effect of Hua Ke (化科) can mitigate this.

Tian Yue (天鉞) — Heavenly Judge: Yin Fire element. The Night Nobleman (夜晚貴人) — subtle, hidden, and often feminine in source. Tian Yue's assistance arrives quietly and may not be immediately recognized. It also carries a gentle peach blossom quality and is associated with finding romance through introductions.

The Four Assistant Stars (四佐曜)

Wen Chang (文昌) — Literary Brilliance: Yang Metal element. Star of structured scholarship, official examinations, written credentials, and formal recognition. A Wen Chang person excels through systematic memorization and organized thinking. Wen Chang in the Life Palace confers elegance of manner, love of learning, and talent for written expression. When Wen Chang undergoes Hua Ke (化科), scholarship and reputation are greatly enhanced; Hua Ji (化忌) causes document complications and memory blockages.

Wen Qu (文曲) — Eloquence Star: Yin Water element. Star of oral talent, artistic sensitivity, emotional memory, and non-standard achievement. Where Wen Chang memorizes systematically, Wen Qu recalls through feeling and atmosphere. Wen Qu in the Life Palace confers charm, sensitivity, musical or artistic talent, and a tendency toward romantic entanglement. Wen Qu Hua Ji creates communication difficulties and contract-related troubles.

The Six Malefics (六凶星)

Qing Yang (擎羊) — Blade Star / Yang Blade: Yang Metal element, transforms as Xing (刑 — punishment). Qing Yang's negative effects are immediate, visible, and sharp — like a spear thrust. It is the star of accidents, blood events, impulsiveness, and aggressive confrontation. However, classical texts note that in strong structures, Qing Yang acts as a vital activator: the "Stone Hides Jade" (石中隱玉格) and "Fire and Greed Wolf" (火貪格) formations demonstrate that Qing Yang can catalyze dormant potential into achievement. Qing Yang always flanks Lu Cun alongside Tuo Luo.

Tuo Luo (陀羅) — Horn Star: Yin Metal element, transforms as Ji (忌 — obstruction). Where Qing Yang strikes instantly, Tuo Luo operates through slow delay, invisible attrition, and indecision. A Tuo Luo person in the Life Palace often appears inscrutable — others cannot tell what they are thinking, and they may not know themselves. The key to using Tuo Luo positively lies in leveraging its characteristic of slowing things down for deliberate, thorough investigation.

Huo Xing (火星) — Fire Star: Yang Fire element. A blazing torch that makes things visible and aggressive. Whatever stars it associates with, it renders them more brash and confrontational. In most contexts negative — it generates turbulent relationships, speculation, and impulsive losses. However, Tan Lang (貪狼) benefits uniquely from Huo Xing through the Hui Chang (火貪格) formation, which can bring unexpected wealth.

Ling Xing (鈴星) — Bell/Siren Star: Yin Fire element. Like Huo Xing but more covert — its disruption arrives through indirect, prolonged channels. The suffering associated with Ling Xing tends toward inner psychological pain that is difficult to forget, unlike the more immediate material losses of Huo Xing.

Di Kong (地空) — Void Earth: Yin Fire element. Causes sudden instantaneous disaster and a tendency for projects to evaporate at critical moments. Di Kong in the Life or Fortune Palace often correlates with deep interest in metaphysics and spiritual pursuits. Its positive face is the capacity to hold perpetual space for new ideas — never becoming stuck in old paradigms.

Di Jie (地劫) — Earth Robbery: Yang Fire element. Causes continuous financial drain and a restless, change-seeking nature. Where Di Kong's damage is primarily psychological (the opportunity that slipped away), Di Jie's damage is primarily material. Together, Di Kong and Di Jie flanking the Life Palace (空劫夾命) indicate a life of significant challenge.
