Domain Analysis: Reading the Key Life Palaces
While the Life Palace (命宮) provides the foundational character blueprint, the richest insights from Zi Wei Dou Shu come from domain-specific palace analysis. Each major life question — career trajectory, wealth accumulation, marital compatibility, health tendencies, property, and spiritual development — has a corresponding palace that must be examined both independently and within its San Fang Si Zheng matrix.
Career Domain (官祿宮)
The Career Palace is one of the most closely scrutinized palaces, particularly in modern practice. It reveals the native's career trajectory, suitable occupational fields, potential for advancement, and overall professional achievement level. The Career Palace forms part of the core financial and career matrix alongside the Life Palace and Wealth Palace.
Key indicators include: the primary star(s) occupying the palace and their element; whether beneficial transformations (化祿, 化權) are present; the San Fang Si Zheng configuration; and the decade/annual activations. Zi Wei (紫微) in the Career Palace is described as the most natural home for the Emperor Star — subject will stand out professionally and command respect. Tian Ji (天機) indicates a career requiring constant change, multi-tasking, and strategic thinking; a 9-to-5 routine is inadvisable. Wu Qu (武曲) points toward financial, industrial, or entrepreneurial careers. Tai Yang (太陽) suggests public-facing roles requiring visibility and reputation management.
Marriage and Relationship Domain (夫妻宮)
The Spouse Palace reveals the nature of the marital bond, characteristics and circumstances of the partner, timing probabilities for marriage, and overall relationship quality. A Zi Wei (紫微) in the Spouse Palace means the partner is demanding and expects to be treated like royalty — the subject must be prepared for an assertive, accomplished partner. Tian Ji (天機) brings instability and frequent change; late marriages are advised. Tan Lang (貪狼) in this palace indicates passionate, complex romantic experiences. The flanking effect is especially relevant here: Zuo Fu or You Bi flanking the Spouse Palace without the other can indicate third-party complications.
The traditional approach to timing marriage involves identifying the decade and annual period when the native's Decade Life Palace activates the Spouse Palace or its San Fang position, particularly when Hong Luan (紅鸞) or Tian Xi (天喜) stars — the romance indicators — fly into or near the Spouse configuration.
Wealth Domain (財帛宮)
The Wealth Palace directly addresses income capacity, financial management ability, and the nature of wealth flow. Different stars describe different wealth profiles: Wu Qu (武曲) in the Wealth Palace indicates income through financial work, entrepreneurship, or metal-related industries. Tian Fu (天府) suggests conservative, steady accumulation — the treasurer who builds wealth methodically. Tai Yang (太陽) may indicate income from public endeavours or positions requiring visibility. Tan Lang (貪狼) combined with fire stars can indicate sudden, dramatic financial gains.
The relationship between the Wealth Palace and the Property Palace (田宅宮) is crucial: a strong Wealth Palace with a weak Property Palace may indicate high income but difficulty accumulating property. Lu Cun (祿存) in the Wealth Palace is exceptionally powerful for financial accumulation, but must not be flanked by Qing Yang and Tuo Luo receiving a Hua Ji in the same court, which would severely disrupt its effectiveness.
Health Domain (疾厄宮)
The Health Palace indicates the native's constitutional strengths and vulnerabilities, correlating specific star-organ relationships. Zi Wei (紫微) relates to head, digestive system, and spleen. Tai Yang (太陽) correlates with heart and circulatory system. Tai Yin (太陰) relates to liver and reproductive system. Tian Ji (天機) indicates susceptibility to nervous system disorders and liver/gall bladder issues. Wen Qu (文曲) and Hua Ji in the Health Palace can affect the limbs.
The Health Palace also reveals patterns of illness — whether acute or chronic, physical or psychological. Di Kong (地空) in the Health Palace often correlates with rare or difficult-to-diagnose conditions. Fire Star (火星) and Bell Star (鈴星) combinations with Tuo Luo in this palace have historically been linked to severe illness susceptibility.
Property Domain (田宅宮)
The Property Palace governs real estate ownership, inherited wealth, family estates, and the overall home environment. A strong Property Palace indicates potential for property accumulation or inheritance. Stars like Tian Fu (天府) and Tan Lang (貪狼) in honoured positions indicate strong property luck. Zi Wei (紫微) here suggests preference for high-floor, prestigious addresses; Tian Ji (天機) indicates frequent relocation and a preference for busy, dynamic neighbourhoods. The Property Palace also reflects the native's overall family wealth environment: a strong configuration indicates a financially secure household foundation.
Fortune and Karma Domain (福德宮)
The Fortune Palace is often overlooked but reveals the native's inner life quality — the wellbeing derived from experience, the degree of genuine satisfaction felt, and psychological predispositions. It also reflects karmic tendencies accumulated from previous lives in classical Chinese metaphysical philosophy. Zi Wei (紫微) here creates ambitious, strong-willed mentality with potential for both magnanimity and frustration when goals are blocked. Tian Ji (天機) here produces a restless, intellectually craving mind that must be active to feel well. Tan Lang (貪狼) here may indicate deep interests in esoteric arts, spiritual practices, and sensory pleasures.
The Fortune Palace's connection to the Life Palace creates a feedback loop: the outer life achievements described by the Life Palace San Fang matrix must ultimately feed back into genuine inner satisfaction represented by the Fortune Palace. A chart with impressive career and wealth indications but a weak, afflicted Fortune Palace may describe a person who achieves greatly but remains fundamentally unsatisfied.
