Vaastu Room Placement — Directional Guidelines

房間方位配置指南

Vaastu Room Placement: Directional Guidelines (房間方位配置)

Room placement in Vaastu Shastra follows the elemental and deity associations of each direction. Proper alignment ensures harmony between human activity and cosmic energy flow. These guidelines represent the traditional framework, adapted with practical considerations for modern architecture.

Room-by-Room Guidelines

  • Pooja / Prayer Room (NE - Ishanya): The Northeast is the zone of water element and spiritual purity. The prayer room, meditation space, or home altar should be placed here. Floor level should be the lowest in the house. Parallels the Feng Shui concept of the Wen Chang (文昌) scholarly sector.
  • Kitchen (SE - Agneya): The Southeast is governed by Agni (fire). All heat sources — stove, oven, electrical panel — belong here. The cook should face East while cooking. Placing the kitchen in the NE is considered one of the most serious Vaastu defects.
  • Master Bedroom (SW - Nairutya): The Southwest is the zone of earth element — stability, heaviness, and authority. The family head sleeps here with the head pointing South or East. This sector should have the highest floor level and thickest walls. Parallels Feng Shui's Nian Yan (延年) sector for relationships.
  • Guest Bedroom / Children (NW - Vayavya): The Northwest is governed by Vayu (air/movement). Ideal for guest rooms (transient occupancy) and children's bedrooms (growth and change). Also suitable for secondary bathrooms.
  • Living Room (N or NE): The north sector, governed by Kubera (wealth deity), is ideal for the main gathering space. Should be well-lit and open.
  • Dining Room (W or E): The west or east sectors provide balanced energy for communal eating. Face East while eating for optimal digestion.
  • Bathroom / Toilet (NW or W): Water drainage should flow toward the North or East. Toilets should never be placed in the NE (pollutes the spiritual zone) or SW (destabilizes the authority zone).
  • Staircase (S, SW, or W): Should ascend in a clockwise direction. Must not be placed in the NE or center (Brahmasthana).

Door and Entrance

The main entrance is most auspicious in the North, East, or Northeast. The entrance door should open inward (welcoming energy) and be the largest door in the house. Multiple entrances are acceptable if the primary one follows directional guidelines.

Feng Shui Comparison

While Vaastu uses fixed directional qualities (NE is always auspicious), Feng Shui systems like Ba Zhai (八宅) calculate auspicious/inauspicious sectors based on the building's sitting direction and the occupant's personal Gua number, creating individualized room placement recommendations that may differ from Vaastu's universal framework.
