Vaastu Shastra: Indian Spatial Science (印度空間科學)
Vaastu Shastra (வாஸ்து சாஸ்திரம்) is the ancient Indian science of architecture and spatial arrangement, dating back to the Sthapatya Veda, an Upaveda (subsidiary Veda) of the Atharva Veda. It governs the design of buildings, temples, towns, and sacred spaces according to cosmic principles — functioning as the Indian counterpart to Chinese Feng Shui (風水).
The Vastu Purusha
The foundational concept is the Vastu Purusha — a cosmic being pinned face-down within the building site by 45 deities. His head lies in the Northeast (Ishanya), feet in the Southwest (Nairutya), right hand in the Northwest (Vayavya), and left hand in the Southeast (Agneya). The building must harmonize with his body to avoid disturbing these energetic zones. Heavy construction on the Purusha's head (NE) causes mental disturbance; on his chest (center) causes heart/breathing issues.
Pancha Bhoota (Five Elements)
Vaastu organizes space according to five elements, each governing a direction:
- Prithvi (Earth - பூமி): Southwest — stability, grounding, master bedroom.
- Jala (Water - ஜலம்): Northeast — purity, spiritual practice, prayer room. Parallel to Feng Shui Water element (水).
- Agni (Fire - அக்னி): Southeast — transformation, cooking, kitchen. Parallel to Feng Shui Fire element (火).
- Vayu (Air - வாயு): Northwest — movement, guests, transient activities. Parallel to Feng Shui Metal/Wind.
- Akasha (Space/Ether - ஆகாயம்): Center — openness, the Brahmasthana, kept empty and unobstructed.
Dikpalas (Directional Guardians)
Eight deities guard the cardinal and inter-cardinal directions: Kubera (N, wealth), Yama (S, death/dharma), Indra (E, prosperity), Varuna (W, water/order), Ishanya/Shiva (NE, purity), Agni (SE, fire), Nairruti (SW, dissolution), Vayu (NW, wind). Their qualities determine appropriate activities for each sector.
Feng Shui Parallels
Both Vaastu and Feng Shui share elemental directional mapping, the concept of a sacred/open center, emphasis on entrance orientation, and the principle that spatial arrangement affects human wellbeing. Key differences: Vaastu uses a fixed directional framework (NE is always auspicious), while Feng Shui systems like Xuan Kong adjust by time period and sitting direction.
