Vastu Purusha Mandala — The Sacred Grid System

Vastu Purusha Mandala: The Sacred Grid (曼陀羅九宮格)

The Vastu Purusha Mandala is the metaphysical grid superimposed on any building site, encoding the cosmic body of the Vastu Purusha and the positions of 45 presiding deities. It is the primary analytical tool in Vaastu Shastra — analogous to the Luopan (羅盤) compass in Feng Shui and the Flying Star grid (飛星盤) in Xuan Kong.

Grid Types

Classical texts describe mandalas of varying resolution:

  • Sakala (1×1): Single unit — simplest, used for small shrines.
  • Pechaka (2×2 = 4 squares): Basic residential analysis.
  • Mahapitha (4×4 = 16 squares): Intermediate residential use.
  • Manduka (8×8 = 64 squares): Used for temples and palaces. Each square is called a Pada.
  • Paramasaayika (9×9 = 81 squares): The most complete form, standard for comprehensive analysis. Contains 45 deity positions mapped to specific Padas.

The 9×9 Paramasaayika

In the standard 81-square grid, the central 9 squares (3×3) form the Brahmasthana — the sacred center associated with Brahma. This zone must remain open, free of pillars, walls, and heavy objects. Around it, deities occupy specific zones:

  • Ishanya (NE corner): Apa (water deity), Aryama — most sacred, lowest floor level.
  • Agneya (SE corner): Agni (fire deity), Pushan — kitchen and fire sources.
  • Nairutya (SW corner): Nairruti, Pitru — heaviest construction, master bedroom.
  • Vayavya (NW corner): Vayu (wind deity), Roga — movement, guest rooms.

Pada Analysis

Each Pada (square) in the grid carries specific energy qualities based on its deity assignment. Walls, doors, and room boundaries should ideally align with Pada boundaries. Door placement on specific Padas determines whether the entrance is auspicious — the 4th and 5th Padas from any corner are generally considered favorable entrance positions.

Cross-System Parallel

The Manduka 8×8 grid directly parallels the Chinese Jiu Gong (九宮 - Nine Palaces) concept used in Xuan Kong Flying Stars, where the Luo Shu (洛書) magic square governs energy distribution. Both systems overlay a cosmic grid on physical space, assign qualities to each zone, and identify a sacred center (Brahmasthana / Center Palace 中宮).
