The Three Dantians (三丹田)
The Dantians (丹田, literally 'cinnabar fields') are the three primary energy centers of the body in Daoist and TCM understanding. They are not merely conceptual but have specific physiological correlates and correspond to specific organ-system functions.
Lower Dantian (下丹田) — The Jing Reservoir
Located approximately three finger-widths below the navel, corresponding to acupoint Qi Hai (CV-6). This is the primary reservoir of Jing and Yuan Qi (Source Qi). The starting point of all cultivation practices. In Neidan, the Lower Dantian breathing technique — directing awareness and breath to this center — begins the process of Jing conservation and transformation. Physically, this region corresponds to the lower abdomen, reproductive organs, and Kidney organ system. Chakra parallel: Svadhisthana and Muladhara.
Middle Dantian (中丹田) — The Qi Transformer
Located at the center of the chest at the sternum level, corresponding to acupoint Shan Zhong (CV-17). This is where emotional Qi and vital Qi are balanced and refined. The seat of the Heart-Mind (心). Physically connected to the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Imbalance manifests as emotional turbulence, palpitations, anxiety, and breathlessness. In Neidan, the Qi that has been refined in the lower center rises through the Du Mai to nourish this center. Chakra parallel: Anahata and Manipura.
Upper Dantian (上丹田) — The Shen Seat
Located between the eyebrows, corresponding to acupoint Yin Tang (EX-HN3). This is the seat of Shen (spirit/consciousness) and intuitive perception. Called the 'Ni Wan Palace' (泥丸宮) in Daoist inner alchemy. Advanced Neidan cultivation activates this center, enabling access to higher states of consciousness. Physically corresponds to the pineal gland region and the brain's frontal lobe. Chakra parallel: Ajna (Third Eye).
Integration with the Macrocosmic Orbit
The three Dantians are connected through the Du Mai and Ren Mai vessels. The Microcosmic Orbit circulates Qi through these two vessels, nourishing all three centers. The Macrocosmic Orbit extends this circulation through all twelve primary meridians, eventually unifying the practitioner's energy body with the cosmic energetic field.
