San Qing: The Three Pure Ones (三清)
The San Qing (三清, Three Pure Ones) are the highest deities in the Daoist cosmological pantheon. They are not separate gods but manifestations of the three aspects of the primordial Dao — each representing a different 'purity' level of Dao expression.
Yuanshi Tianzun (元始天尊) — Heavenly Worthy of Primordial Beginning
The first and highest of the Three Pure Ones. Resides in the Jade Clarity (玉清) realm. Embodies Wuji and the primordial Dao before any differentiation — the absolute beginning that precedes all cosmological sequences. Holds the Pearl of Chaos (混元珠). Transmits the highest metaphysical truths and the original Daoist scriptures.
Lingbao Tianzun (靈寶天尊) — Heavenly Worthy of Numinous Treasure
The second of the Three Pure Ones. Resides in the Upper Clarity (上清) realm. Embodies the principle of Yin-Yang at the moment of their first differentiation. Governs the transmission of sacred texts (the Ling Bao scriptures) and the ordering of the cosmos through divine scripture. Associated with the Ling Bao (靈寶) school of Daoism.
Daode Tianzun (道德天尊) — Heavenly Worthy of the Dao and De
The third of the Three Pure Ones. Resides in the Great Clarity (太清) realm. Most closely identified with the human realm and with Laozi as the deified sage-transmitter of the Dao De Jing. The most accessible of the Three for ritual invocation. In Liuren Fajiao practice, Daode Tianzun is frequently invoked as the foundational divine authority underlying all Fa work, since the Dao De Jing's principles permeate the ritual system.
Cosmological Significance
The Three Pure Ones map onto the three stages of the Neidan process: Yuanshi corresponds to the Wuji goal of Lian Shen Huan Xu (return to the void); Lingbao corresponds to the intermediate Qi-Shen transformation; Daode corresponds to the initial foundation work. Venerating the San Qing is simultaneously venerating the stages of one's own cultivation path.
