Neidan: Inner Alchemy (內丹術)
Neidan (內丹, Inner Alchemy) is the central practice system of the Mountain Art. Unlike Waidan (外丹, Outer Alchemy) which sought immortality through the ingestion of refined minerals, Neidan uses the body itself as the alchemical laboratory — refining the Three Treasures (Jing, Qi, Shen) through progressively subtle practices.
Stage 1: 煉精化氣 — Refining Essence into Qi
The first stage focuses on the Lower Dantian (下丹田). Through conservation practices, specific Qi Gong movements, and regulated breathing, accumulated Jing (physical essence) is transformed into refined Qi. This stage requires: sexual conservation (not abstinence per se, but avoiding unnecessary depletion), dietary regulation, consistent sleep, and Lower Dantian breathing exercises. Duration: typically years of sustained practice.
Stage 2: 煉氣化神 — Refining Qi into Shen
The second stage involves the Microcosmic Orbit (小周天) — the circulation of Qi up the Du Mai (Governing Vessel, spine) and down the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel, front centerline). As Qi circulates and refines, it naturally rises toward the Upper Dantian, where it begins to nourish Shen directly. This stage involves sustained meditation and breath retention practices.
Stage 3: 煉神還虛 — Refining Shen and Returning to the Void
The third and culminating stage involves the dissolution of the individual self back into the primordial Wuji — the return to the source. The practitioner's Shen merges with the universal consciousness. This is the Daoist equivalent of Samadhi or Nirvana — the goal is not annihilation but integration with the Dao itself.
The Alchemical Framework
Neidan uses the language of external alchemy metaphorically: the Lower Dantian is the 'furnace' (爐), the Heart is the 'cauldron' (鼎), Jing is the 'lead' (鉛), Qi is the 'mercury' (汞), and the refined Shen is the 'golden elixir' (金丹). This language encodes a sophisticated understanding of consciousness transformation.
