The Twelve Ci (十二次——中國黃道分區)

The Twelve Ci (十二次) are twelve equal 30-degree divisions of the celestial sphere that serve as the Chinese equivalent of zodiac signs. Originally tied to Jupiter's approximately 12-year orbital period (Jupiter 'resides' in each Ci for roughly one year), the Twelve Ci provide the house-framework within which QZSY natal charts are constructed. Each Ci corresponds to an Earthly Branch, a Western zodiac sign equivalent, and a territorial division of China through the Fen Ye (分野) system.

Jupiter's 12-Year Cycle

The Twelve Ci system is fundamentally connected to Jupiter's orbital period of approximately 11.86 years. Ancient Chinese astronomers tracked Jupiter's annual progress through the sky and designated each of the twelve regions it passed through as a Ci (次, literally 'station' or 'order'). This is why Jupiter is called 歲星 (Sui Xing, 'Year Star') — it marks the passage of years by its position. The 'Tai Sui' (太歲) counter-Jupiter concept, which moves in the opposite direction through the Earthly Branches, arose as a correction for Jupiter's slightly shorter-than-12-year period.

Fen Ye — Celestial-Terrestrial Mapping

The Fen Ye (分野, 'Field Allocation') system maps each Ci to a specific Chinese territorial state or province. This mapping was used primarily in mundane astrology — when a planet appeared in a particular Ci, its influence was interpreted as affecting the corresponding territory. Eclipses, comets, and unusual planetary configurations in a given Ci were read as omens for that region's political and natural fortunes.

Comparison with Western Signs and Vedic Rashis

All three systems divide the ecliptic into twelve 30-degree segments, but they are oriented differently. Western tropical signs begin at the vernal equinox (0° Aries = spring equinox point). Vedic sidereal Rashis are fixed to the stars with an ayanamsa offset from the tropical framework. Chinese Ci divisions are also sidereal (star-fixed) but use different boundary conventions than the Indian system. The Ci system predates significant contact with Indian astrology, suggesting independent development from common astronomical observation of Jupiter's 12-year cycle.
