Star Combinations & Configurations (星曜組合格局)
Classical QZSY texts — particularly the Guo Lao Xing Zong and Xing Xue Da Cheng — catalogue numerous named configurations (格局, Ge Ju) that arise when specific planets occupy particular positions or form particular aspect patterns. These configurations are pattern-based interpretive shortcuts: rather than analyzing each planet individually and synthesizing, the practitioner recognizes a named pattern and applies its established meaning.
Auspicious Configurations (吉格)
| Configuration | Chinese | Condition | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun-Moon Radiance | 日月並明 | Sun and Moon both in Temple/Exaltation, one above and one below the horizon | Balanced Yin-Yang, noble character, public recognition, leadership |
| Jupiter-Venus Gathering | 金木交輝 | Jupiter and Venus in conjunction or trine, both in favorable dignity | Wealth with beauty, cultured prosperity, harmonious relationships and fortune |
| Three Stars in Temple | 三星入廟 | Three or more planets in their Temple positions simultaneously | Extraordinary destiny, multiple life domains operating at peak potential |
| Mercury Guards Life | 辰星守命 | Mercury well-dignified in the Life Palace | Sharp intellect, eloquence, commercial success, literary talent |
| Jupiter in Career | 歲星守官 | Jupiter well-dignified in the Career Palace (官祿宮) | High office, steady career advancement, noble reputation, leadership |
Inauspicious Configurations (凶格)
| Configuration | Chinese | Condition | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire-Rahu Gathering | 火羅同聚 | Mars and Rahu in conjunction, especially in angular houses | Sudden calamity, fire hazards, violent conflict, obsessive aggression |
| Saturn-Ketu Oppression | 土計交侵 | Saturn and Ketu in conjunction or square | Heavy karmic restriction, chronic illness, isolation, blocked progress |
| Multiple Detriments | 群星落陷 | Three or more planets in Detriment simultaneously | Difficult overall destiny, multiple life domains compromised, need for compensating factors |
| Luminaries Eclipsed | 日月受蝕 | Sun or Moon conjunct Rahu or Ketu (eclipse configuration) | Identity crisis, health vulnerability, parental difficulties, periodic life disruptions |
Identifying Configurations in Practice
Configuration identification follows a systematic process: (1) Check for conjunctions and close aspects between planets, (2) Assess the dignity of all involved planets, (3) Note which houses the configuration falls in, (4) Cross-reference with the classical catalogue of named patterns. A single chart may contain multiple configurations, both auspicious and inauspicious. The overall reading depends on which configurations dominate and how they interact.
Context Modifies Everything
No configuration operates in isolation. An auspicious pattern can be undermined by surrounding factors (e.g., 日月並明 is less beneficial if both luminaries are afflicted by Mars or Saturn aspects). Conversely, an inauspicious pattern can be mitigated by the presence of a benefic planet (Jupiter or Venus) in a supporting position. The classical texts emphasize that configurations indicate tendencies, not certainties, and that the overall chart synthesis must take precedence over any single pattern.
