Planetary Dignities in QZSY (七政四餘星曜尊貴)
The dignity system is one of the most critical interpretive tools in QZSY. A planet's dignity — its condition based on its Ci (zodiacal) position — determines whether it operates at full strength, partial strength, or in a weakened state. The same planet can produce radically different life outcomes depending on its dignity: Jupiter in its Temple (廟) position brings abundant prosperity, while Jupiter in Detriment (陷) may indicate squandered opportunities and false promises.
The Five Dignity Levels
| Level | Chinese | Meaning | Strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| Temple | 廟 (Miao) | The planet is in its ruling position — maximum resonance with the Ci | 100% — Full power, pure expression |
| Exaltation | 旺 (Wang) | The planet is in its exalted position — highly energised | 80% — Very strong, elevated expression |
| Favorable | 利 (Li) | The planet is in a friendly, supportive position | 60% — Moderately strong, cooperative |
| Neutral | 平 (Ping) | The planet is in a neutral position — neither helped nor hindered | 40% — Average, unremarkable |
| Detriment | 陷 (Xian) | The planet is in its weakest position — obstructed or corrupted | 20% — Weak, distorted expression |
Dignity Assignments by Planet and Ci
Each of the Seven Governors has specific Ci positions where it reaches each dignity level. For example, the Sun (太陽) is in Temple in the Ci corresponding to Leo (鶉火/午), in Exaltation in the Ci corresponding to Aries (降婁/戌), and in Detriment in the Ci corresponding to Aquarius (玄枵/子). The Moon (太陰) is in Temple in Cancer (鶉首/未) and in Detriment in Capricorn (星紀/丑). These assignments follow patterns rooted in the elemental affinity between the planet and the Ci's associated element — Fire planets thrive in Fire Ci, Water planets in Water Ci.
Comparison with Western Essential Dignities
The QZSY dignity system closely parallels the Western system of Essential Dignities — Domicile (Temple), Exaltation, Detriment (Fall), and Exile (Detriment). This parallel almost certainly reflects their shared Hellenistic origin. However, the Chinese five-level system (廟旺利平陷) adds a 'Favorable' (利) level between Exaltation and Neutral that has no exact Western equivalent, providing finer granularity. The Vedic system uses a similar set of positional strengths within its Shadbala calculations.
Impact on Chart Interpretation
Dignity assessment is the first step in evaluating any planet's influence in a QZSY chart. A planet in Temple delivers its positive significations cleanly and powerfully. A planet in Detriment may still influence the houses it rules, but its expression is twisted, delayed, or diminished. In practice, the dignity of the Life Palace's ruling planet and the dignity of the Sun and Moon are the three most consequential assessments in any natal chart — they set the fundamental tone for the entire reading.
