The Four Transformations of Planets (星曜四化)
The Four Transformations (四化) describe how a planet's fundamental meaning shifts based on its condition, interactions, and chart context. A planet does not simply express its base nature — it transforms into one of four modalities depending on how it is activated. This system parallels the famous Si Hua (四化) mechanism in Zi Wei Dou Shu but is applied to real celestial bodies rather than imaginary stars.
The Four Transformation Modes
| Transformation | Chinese | Meaning | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hua Lu | 化祿 | Prosperity Transformation | The planet generates wealth, abundance, and favorable outcomes in its domain. Opportunities flow easily. The house it occupies becomes a source of material and emotional gain. |
| Hua Quan | 化權 | Power Transformation | The planet gains authority, decisiveness, and executive force. The native exerts strong control over the domain of the house. Can indicate leadership but also stubbornness. |
| Hua Ke | 化科 | Fame Transformation | The planet attracts recognition, scholarly achievement, and social esteem. The house domain becomes a source of reputation and intellectual accomplishment. |
| Hua Ji | 化忌 | Obstacle Transformation | The planet creates blockages, fixations, and difficulties. The house domain becomes a source of worry, obsession, or repeated setbacks. Not necessarily catastrophic — can indicate deep focus. |
Derivation from Classical Texts
The Four Transformations in QZSY are derived from the interaction between a planet's dignity (its Ci position strength), its aspects (relationships with other planets), and its house position (the life domain it activates). A planet in Temple (廟) dignity with harmonious aspects naturally tends toward Hua Lu or Hua Quan. A planet in Detriment (陷) with challenging aspects tends toward Hua Ji. The specific transformation is determined by evaluating these factors in combination, following the methodology outlined in the Guo Lao Xing Zong.
Parallel to ZWDS Si Hua
In ZWDS, the Four Transformations are mechanically assigned based on the Heavenly Stem of the Year Pillar — each Stem triggers specific star-transformation pairs through a fixed lookup table. In QZSY, the process is less mechanical and more evaluative: the practitioner assesses the planet's overall condition to determine which transformation mode it operates in. This makes QZSY's Four Transformations more nuanced but also more dependent on practitioner judgment.
Practical Application
When interpreting a natal chart, identifying each planet's transformation mode provides a layer of meaning beyond its base signification. Jupiter (prosperity, expansion) in Hua Ji mode does not simply reduce prosperity — it transforms Jupiter's expansive nature into excessive or misguided expansion, such as over-investment, unrealistic optimism, or weight gain. Venus (beauty, relationships) in Hua Ke mode brings romantic relationships into the public eye, indicating a partner who contributes to the native's social reputation.
Dynamic Transformations in Timing
Planets can shift between transformation modes during different fate periods (大限) and annual transits (流年). A planet that operates in Hua Lu mode during a favorable Da Xian period may shift to Hua Ji during a challenging one. This dynamic quality is essential for predictive work and explains why the same natal placement can manifest differently at different life stages.
