The Seven Governors (七政——日月五星)

The Seven Governors (七政) are the seven visible celestial bodies that 'govern' (政) earthly affairs according to Chinese astronomical tradition. The term itself conveys their role: these are not merely objects in the sky but active agents of cosmic governance, each wielding specific elemental power and symbolic authority over domains of human life. Together they form the core planetary framework of the QZSY system.

Classical Aliases Explained

Each planet's classical Chinese name carries rich astronomical and symbolic meaning. Mercury is called 辰星 (Chen Xing, 'Morning Star') because it never strays far from the Sun and is best seen at dawn. Venus is 太白 (Tai Bai, 'Great White') for its brilliant white appearance — it was also considered a military omen, and its appearance during daylight was interpreted as a portent of warfare. Mars is 熒惑 (Ying Huo, 'Sparkling Deluder') because its erratic retrograde motion 'confuses' observers and its red colour signals disruption. Jupiter is 歲星 (Sui Xing, 'Year Star') because its approximately 12-year orbital period was used to define the 12-year Jupiter cycle that underlies the Twelve Ci divisions. Saturn is 鎮星 (Zhen Xing, 'Garrison Star') because it appears to 'guard' (鎮) each Ci for approximately 2.5 years during its 29.5-year orbit.

Comparison with Western Planet Meanings

Striking parallels exist between QZSY and Western planetary symbolism, likely reflecting their shared Hellenistic ancestry. Both systems associate Jupiter with expansion and prosperity, Saturn with limitation and discipline, Mars with conflict and action, Venus with beauty and relationships, and Mercury with communication and intellect. The Sun and Moon carry luminous sovereign authority in both systems. However, important differences emerge in the Five Element framework: QZSY interprets planetary interactions through the generating (生) and overcoming (剋) cycles rather than the purely geometric aspect theory of Western astrology. A Jupiter-Sun interaction is not merely a trine or conjunction — it is a Wood-produces-Fire relationship with specific elemental implications.

Astronomical Observation

Ancient Chinese astronomers maintained systematic records of planetary positions, retrograde motion, conjunctions, and occultations. The Tianwen Zhi (天文志) sections of the dynastic histories contain centuries of detailed observational data. This empirical foundation distinguishes QZSY from purely algorithmic systems and connects it to the living sky.
