Da Xian & Xiao Xian — Fate Periods (大限與小限)
The Da Xian (大限) and Xiao Xian (小限) systems are the primary timing mechanisms in QZSY, dividing the native's life into structured periods governed by successive houses and their planetary lords. They answer the fundamental predictive question: when will the natal chart's potentials manifest?
Da Xian — The Major Fate Periods
Da Xian divides life into 10-year periods, each governed by a successive house and its ruling planet. The first Da Xian begins at the Life Palace (命宮) and progresses through the twelve houses in order. The planetary lord of each house determines the character of that decade:
- If the Da Xian lord is a benefic (Jupiter or Venus) in good dignity, the decade brings prosperity, expansion, and favorable developments in the lord's domain.
- If the Da Xian lord is a malefic (Mars or Saturn) in poor dignity, the decade brings challenges, restrictions, and restructuring.
- The house itself adds a thematic layer — a Da Xian in the Wealth Palace period focuses life events on financial matters, regardless of the lord's nature.
Da Xian Calculation Method
The starting age for each Da Xian is calculated from the native's birth data using a procedure that considers the distance between the Ascendant and the nearest Solar Term boundary, converted into years. This is conceptually similar to the BaZi Da Yun (大運) starting age calculation, which also measures the distance to the nearest Jie (節) boundary. The two systems may produce similar but not identical starting ages.
Xiao Xian — The Annual Overlay
Xiao Xian provides an annual overlay that cycles through all twelve houses in a 12-year pattern. Each year, a different house is activated as the Xiao Xian position, bringing that house's themes and its occupying planets into focus. The Xiao Xian interacts with the Da Xian to create a layered timing picture — a favorable Xiao Xian year within an unfavorable Da Xian decade may produce a temporary respite or opportunity.
Layered Timing Analysis
| Layer | Period | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Natal Chart | Lifetime | Overall potential and constitutional pattern |
| Da Xian | ~10 years | Decadal theme and governing planet |
| Xiao Xian | 1 year | Annual focus house and theme |
| Liu Nian | 1 year | Annual transit overlay (real planetary positions) |
| Liu Yue | 1 month | Monthly transit refinement |
Comparison with BaZi Da Yun and Vedic Dasha
The BaZi Da Yun system also uses 10-year periods but cycles through Stem-Branch pairs rather than houses. The Vedic Vimshottari Dasha system uses unequal planetary periods (Sun: 6 years, Moon: 10 years, Mars: 7 years, etc.) totaling 120 years. Each system provides a different timing framework; advanced practitioners may consult multiple timing systems simultaneously to identify periods of convergent indication — when all systems point to the same type of event, predictive confidence is highest.
