Liu Nian & Liu Yue — Annual/Monthly Analysis (流年流月分析)
Liu Nian (流年) and Liu Yue (流月) are QZSY's transit-based timing systems that overlay current planetary positions onto the natal chart. Unlike Da Xian (which is a fixed, pre-calculated life timeline), Liu Nian uses the actual, real-time positions of the Seven Governors to identify how current celestial configurations activate natal chart potentials. This transit methodology is where QZSY's astronomical foundation becomes most practically valuable.
Annual Transit Analysis (流年)
Liu Nian analysis examines where the planets are positioned in a given year relative to the natal chart. Key techniques include:
- Jupiter Transit: Jupiter completes an orbit in ~12 years, spending approximately one year in each Ci. When transiting Jupiter crosses a sensitive natal point (especially the Life Palace lord, Career Palace, or Wealth Palace), it triggers expansion and opportunity in that domain.
- Saturn Transit: Saturn completes an orbit in ~29.5 years, spending approximately 2.5 years in each Ci. Saturn transits are the most consequential long-term influences — they bring restructuring, testing, and maturation to whatever house they activate.
- Eclipse Activation: When a solar or lunar eclipse falls near a natal planet or sensitive house cusp, it catalyzes major life events. Eclipses occur at the Rahu/Ketu axis, connecting transit analysis to the Four Remainders' natal positions.
Monthly Refinement (流月)
Liu Yue narrows the annual analysis to monthly resolution. The Moon's rapid motion (completing the full zodiac in ~27.3 days) means it activates different natal configurations each month. The Sun, Mercury, and Venus also shift significantly month to month. Liu Yue is used to identify the specific months within a significant Liu Nian year when events are most likely to manifest.
Predictive Methodology
The predictive workflow combines all timing layers:
- Identify the current Da Xian theme: What decade are we in? What is its governing planet and house?
- Check the Xiao Xian house: What annual focus house overlays the Da Xian?
- Analyze Liu Nian transits: Where are the outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn) this year relative to the natal chart?
- Refine with Liu Yue: Which months show the tightest transit alignments with natal sensitive points?
- Cross-reference with BaZi: Does the BaZi annual pillar confirm or complicate the QZSY transit picture?
Comparison with Western Transits
QZSY Liu Nian analysis is structurally identical to Western transit analysis — both track actual planetary movements against the natal chart. The difference lies in the interpretive framework: Western transits are read through aspect geometry and sign symbolism, while QZSY transits are filtered through Five Element interactions and mansion/Ci significance. Practitioners trained in both systems can apply dual-framework transit analysis for richer insight.
