The Six Ding and Six Jia: Protective Spirit Warriors (六丁六甲)
The Six Ding (六丁) and Six Jia (六甲) are the twelve divine warrior-spirits that form the protective core of Liuren Fajiao ritual practice. They are derived from the twelve combinations of Heavenly Stems (六丁 = Ding-Mao, Ding-Si, Ding-Wei, Ding-You, Ding-Hai, Ding-Chou; 六甲 = Jia-Zi, Jia-Xu, Jia-Shen, Jia-Wu, Jia-Chen, Jia-Yin).
The Six Ding (六丁) — Yin/Female Warriors
The Six Ding are associated with the Yin, feminine aspects of protection. Each has a specific spirit name and domain: Ding Mao (丁卯) — Si Ma Qing (司馬卿): Saves from misfortune and removes obstacles. Ding Si (丁巳) — Cui Ju Qing (崔巨卿): Saves from danger and physical harm. Ding Wei (丁未) — Shi Shu Tong (石叔通): Stops ongoing disasters. Ding You (丁酉) — Zang Wen Gong (臧文公): Controls Jing/essence — guards reproductive vitality. Ding Hai (丁亥) — Zhang Wen Tong (張文通): Controls Hun/Ethereal Soul — governs dream life and ancestral connections. Ding Chou (丁丑) — Zhao Zi Yu (趙子玉): Controls lifespan — influences life-extension and fate rectification.
The Six Jia (六甲) — Yang/Male Warriors
The Six Jia embody Yang protective power: Jia Zi (甲子) — Wang Wen Qing (王文卿): Protects the body. Jia Xu (甲戌) — Zhan Zi Jiang (展子江): Protects form/energetic double. Jia Shen (甲申) — Hu Wen Chang (扈文長): Protects life force. Jia Wu (甲午) — Wei Yu Qing (衛玉卿): Protects the Corporeal Soul (Po). Jia Chen (甲辰) — Meng Fei Qing (孟非卿): Protects Shen/higher consciousness. Jia Yin (甲寅) — Ming Wen Zhang (明文章): Nurtures the true nature of the practitioner.
Ritual Protocol
The Six Ding and Six Jia are invoked through specific Hand Seals, incantations (Zhou 咒), and Fu (符 talismans) dedicated to the specific spirit pair appropriate to the ritual function. The Ding spirits are primarily invoked for protective and healing work; the Jia spirits for cultivation support and ritual integrity.
