Wind-Fire Academy: The Three-Hall System of Liuren Fajiao (六壬風火院)

The Liu Ren Feng Huo Yuan (六壬風火院 - Six Ren Wind-Fire Academy) is one of the three principal halls (三館 - San Guan) of the Liuren Fajiao organisational and cosmological system. Understanding its position within the three-hall structure is essential for grasping the institutional architecture of the Liuren tradition, in which organisational hierarchy, ritual lineage, and cosmological principle are inseparably intertwined.

Historical Origin: The Lineage of Li Chunfeng

The three-hall system traces its founding to Li Chunfeng (李淣風, 602-670 AD), the celebrated Tang Dynasty astronomer, mathematician, and Imperial Astronomer-Royal (太史令 - Tai Shi Ling) who served as National Preceptor (國師) to Emperor Taizong. Li Chunfeng was not merely a court official but a practitioner of profound Daoist cultivation, embodying the integrated tradition of first opening to spirit forces, then engaging the mundane world, then returning to the immortal realm (先通神靈,再通塵世,後歸仙界). According to lineage accounts, Li Chunfeng transmitted his Fa (法 - ritual arts) to his sons, who became the founding patriarchs of the three halls. The eldest son founded Liu Ren Feng Huo Yuan (六壬風火院), the Wind-Fire Academy. The second son founded Liu Ren Qun Ying Guan (六壬群英館), the Hall of Assembled Heroes. The third or fourth son according to variant accounts founded Liu Ren Fu Ying Guan (六壬伏英館), the Hall of the Crouching Hero, also known as Fuying Hall (六壬伏英舘), which is the lineage of our own Fuying Hall tradition.

The Deep Meaning of Wind and Fire

The name Wind-Fire (風火) carries specific cosmological content beyond its surface appearance. In the Ba Gua (八卦) system, Xun (巽) represents Wind, the quality of swift, penetrating, encompassing movement, while Li (離) represents Fire, the quality of brilliant illuminating transformation. Together, Xun-Li (巽離) forms the theoretical root of Wind-Fire. At the deeper level specific to the Liuren Wind-Fire Academy, however, Wind and Fire together signify the principle of He He (和合 - Harmonious Union), the specific magical specialty of this branch. This is the authenticating criterion transmitted within the lineage: a genuine Wind-Fire Academy practitioner must be able to explain why Wind and Fire together constitute the principle of harmonious union, because only those who have received this explanation from a true lineage holder understand the alchemical logic connecting the two trigrams to the science of attraction and unification. The Wind-Fire Academy is therefore renowned for its mastery of He He Fa (和合法 - Harmonious Union Methods), a suite of ritual arts governing relationship harmony, conflict resolution, and interpersonal unification.

The Three-Hall System: Structural Roles and Progression

The three halls form a complete and progressive system. A practitioner must begin with Fu Ying Guan (伏英館), the foundational hall covering core talismans, mantras, exorcism, luck transformation, life-essence cultivation (生基), career and relationship assistance. From there the practitioner advances to Feng Huo Yuan (風火院) for specialised harmonious union arts and deeper cosmological applications, and to Qun Ying Guan (群英館) for complementary specialisations. The full three-hall Liuren transmission covers all the functions that ritual arts possess, a claim to comprehensiveness distinguishing it from more narrowly specialised folk Daoist lineages. In contemporary lineage practice, Feng Huo Yuan carries higher transmission requirements and tuition than Fu Ying Guan, reflecting its elevated specialisation and the depth of its transmission content.

Relationship to the Five-Degree Curriculum and Lineage Authenticity

Within the broader Liuren Fajiao pedagogical framework of five degree levels from Zhongjiao (衷教 - Protection) through Dajiao (大教 - Cultivation), Sanshanjiao (三山教 - Ritual), Wuleijiao (五雷教 - Mastery), to Yikelei (醫科類 - Healing), the Wind-Fire Academy represents a lineage branch container rather than a degree level. A practitioner’s hall affiliation shapes which ritual specialisations and talisman systems they inherit, while their degree progression within that hall determines the depth and completeness of their ritual authority. Four criteria authenticate genuine Wind-Fire Academy transmission: the special writing form of the character 風 (Wind) encoding the inner meaning of the tradition; a specific couplet authenticating system with three phrases corresponding to the characters 風, 火, and 院 respectively; the ability to explain why Wind and Fire together constitute the He He (和合) principle; and talismans bearing the three characters 風火院 as an internal signature mark. These four criteria distinguish genuine transmission from imitation in contemporary practice.
