Empty Space & Void Branches (空亡 / 截路空亡)
Kong Wang (空亡) identifies the two Earthly Branches in each ten-stem Xun group that are left without a Heavenly Stem pairing. Because the ten Heavenly Stems map onto only ten of the twelve Earthly Branches, two branches remain unclaimed — voided. The classical definition reads: 空亡者，截路之謂也 — “Kong Wang is what is called the cut-off road.” These void branches remain present in the chart structurally, but their elemental and Ten God energy cannot manifest with full potency.
The Six Xun Groups — Calculation Table
Identify the Day Pillar’s GanZhi, locate its Xun group, and read off the two voided branches:

The Three Functional Effects of Kong Wang
- 虛 (Xu — Nullification): The element and Ten God are present in the chart but disabled. The classical phrase is 有而無用，名為空亡 — “present yet useless — this is called void.” Wealth present but voided may mean the person earns but cannot retain; Officer present but voided may mean career advancement is blocked despite ability.
- 緩 (Huan — Delay): Manifestation is postponed rather than cancelled. The domain governed by the voided Ten God will eventually express — but only when the void is filled by a Luck Pillar branch or annual flow branch that resolves the void through clash or Three Harmony completion.
- 靈 (Ling — Spiritualisation): The energy of the voided branch shifts from material to metaphysical expression. A voided Resource Star (Seal) may indicate that knowledge comes through intuition and spiritual study rather than formal academic channels. A voided Day Branch Spouse Star may indicate that the partner relationship takes on a more spiritual or idealised quality.
Kong Wang by Pillar Position
- Year Branch voided: The ancestral and social domain is muted. Disconnection from heritage, hometown, or family lineage. The ancestral field does not provide the usual foundation of support.
- Month Branch voided: The career and vocational domain is affected. The Month Command (月令) — the most influential position in the chart — is weakened. Parental relationship (especially the same-sex parent) is strained or distant. Career advancement requires extra sustained effort.
- Day Branch voided: The Spousal Palace (配偶宮) is voided. This is the most significant Kong Wang position. The classical text states: 日支空亡，妻宮受損 — “Day Branch voided, the Spouse Palace is damaged.” Late marriage, unconventional partnership arrangements, or a marriage that feels spiritually oriented rather than materially grounded are common expressions.
- Hour Branch voided: The Children’s Palace and late-life aspirations are spiritualised. Non-conventional family formation. Late-life goals may redirect toward metaphysical, artistic, or philanthropic channels rather than material accumulation.
When Kong Wang Is Beneficial (空亡利用)
Not all Kong Wang is harmful. The principle is: voiding an obstructing force is beneficial. Three scenarios where Kong Wang serves the chart:
- Voided uncontrolled Seven Killings (七殺): When Seven Killings has no controlling Resource or Output to manage it, Kong Wang neutralises its destructive force — the aggressor is suspended rather than operative.
- Voided Rob Wealth (劫財) in a Wealth structure: Rob Wealth competes with and damages Wealth. When Rob Wealth is voided, Wealth accumulation is protected.
- Voided Hurting Officer (傷官) in a Direct Officer structure: Hurting Officer attacks and damages the Officer. Its voiding preserves career structure integrity.
When Kong Wang Is Harmful
- Voided Yong Shen (用神 — the chart’s critical useful god): the primary supportive force is disabled.
- Voided Spouse Star: relationship domain hollowed out.
- Voided chart structure’s naming Ten God (e.g., voided Direct Officer in an Officer-structure chart).
沖空即實 — Clash Fills the Void
The principle 沖空即實 states: “When clashed, the void is filled and becomes real.” When the branch that opposes the voided branch arrives in a Luck Pillar or annual flow, the void is resolved and the suspended energy manifests. Example: if Xu (戌) is voided, when Chen (辰) arrives (the opposing branch), the void is filled. Three Harmony completion involving the voided branch also fills the void. Classical: 逢沖則實，沖空方顯 — “upon receiving clash it becomes real; only when the void is clashed does it manifest.”
Kong Wang and Spiritual / Religious Inclination
The Ling (靈) effect is particularly pronounced when the Day Branch or Hour Branch is voided. When the Hua Gai (華蓋) Shen Sha is also present in the chart — especially in the same pillar position as the voided branch — the spiritual and esoteric inclination is dramatically amplified. Such charts often produce practitioners of metaphysics, religious vocation, or healing arts.
Six-Step Application Protocol
- Identify the Day Pillar GanZhi → locate its Xun group → note the two voided branches.
- Check all four natal branches against the void pair.
- For each voided branch, identify its Ten God role in the chart.
- Apply the Xu / Huan / Ling framework: is the voided Ten God Yong Shen (harmful void) or Ji Shen (beneficial void)?
- Scan Luck Pillars and major annual flows for the opposing branch (void-filling clash events) and note approximate timing.
- Note any Hua Gai coincidence for spiritual inclination assessment.
