Meaning 意義

Hik: the upward propulsion of consciousness from the heart to the crown; Phat: the ejection of consciousness into the space of the pure realm

Ritual Use & Practice 修持法門

Recited at the moment of death or near-death to transfer the consciousness to a pure realm. Also used in daily Phowa practice to train the consciousness before death. The syllable Hik draws consciousness upward through the central channel; Phat ejects it through the crown fontanelle (Brahma-randhra) into Amitābha's pure realm or into the awareness of the Dharmakaya.

Background & Significance 背景與意義

Phowa (Tib: འཕོ་བ — Consciousness Transference) is one of the Six Dharmas of Naropa and one of the most practically important Tibetan Buddhist practices. It is the art of directing one's consciousness at the moment of death to achieve liberation or a fortunate rebirth. The practice involves visualising a central channel running from the navel chakra through the heart and up to the crown, with the consciousness (as a luminous drop or Hum syllable) residing in the heart. Through repeated training with the mantra Hik and Phat, the practitioner learns to eject consciousness to the crown and beyond. Physical signs of successful Phowa practice include a small indentation or warmth at the crown of the head (brahmarandhra). Traditionally administered to the dying by a qualified lama who can transfer the consciousness of others.
