Ritual Use & Practice 修持法門
Recited by lamas and family members in the presence of a dying or recently deceased person. The Bardo Thodol (Liberation Through Hearing in the Bardo) is read aloud continuously for 49 days after death to guide the deceased's consciousness through the bardos.
Background & Significance 背景與意義
The Bardo Thodol (བར་དོ་ཐོས་གྲོལ — commonly known in the West as the Tibetan Book of the Dead) is a Terma text revealed by Karma Lingpa in the 14th century, containing the full instructions for navigating the three bardos (intermediate states) between death and rebirth: the Chikhai Bardo (moment of death), Chönyid Bardo (reality / luminosity bardo), and Sidpa Bardo (becoming bardo where karmic visions arise). This invocation is read at the threshold of the Chönyid Bardo, where the deceased encounters the peaceful and wrathful deities. Recognition of these apparitions as one's own mind is liberation; failure to recognise leads to continued rebirth. The text instructs the deceased to recognise the clear light of the Dharmakaya at the moment of death and to not be frightened by the sound, light, and colour displays in the bardos.
