14th Dalai Lama
第十四世達賴喇嘛
Tenzin Gyatso; Ocean of Wisdom
Biography & Significance
Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, is the most internationally recognised Buddhist leader in modern history. Recognised as the reincarnation of his predecessor at age two, he was enthroned in Lhasa in 1940. Following the Chinese annexation of Tibet and the failed 1959 uprising, he fled to India with 80,000 Tibetan refugees and established the Tibetan government-in-exile in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his non-violent campaign for Tibetan autonomy, he has been a tireless advocate for human rights, inter-religious dialogue, and the integration of Buddhist philosophy with modern science. He has given thousands of public teachings globally and authored over 100 books. In 2011, he relinquished political authority to an elected Tibetan leadership, retaining only his spiritual role. He teaches from all four schools of Tibetan Buddhism and is considered a living manifestation of Avalokiteśvara (the Bodhisattva of Compassion).
