พระนารายณ์

Vishnu / Narayana

那羅延天

Protector

Phra Narai is depicted as a noble deity with dark blue or black skin, symbolising his all-pervading, infinite nature like the vast sky. He has four arms, each holding his iconic attributes: the conch shell representing cosmic sound, the spinning discus as a weapon of divine justice, the jewelled mace as symbol of authority, and the lotus as symbol of purity. He wears celestial jewels and a tall crown, and in Thai iconography is often shown riding or standing before the magnificent eagle-man Garuda.

Role 職能

Phra Narai is the preserver and sustainer of the cosmic order, incarnating in the world as an avatar whenever the balance of dharma is threatened. He is deeply venerated in Thai royal tradition as the divine archetype of kingship, and his Garuda mount is the symbol of Thai royalty.

Thai Significance 泰式意義

Phra Narai holds a place of supreme importance in the Thai royal tradition, where the king has historically been regarded as a living avatar or earthly manifestation of Narayana-Vishnu. The Garuda (ครุฑ), his divine mount, is the official emblem of the Thai state and appears on all royal documents, government seals, and banknotes. Grand Brahmanical ceremonies performed by royal Brahmin priests (Phram Luang) at the Thai court — such as the Royal Ploughing Ceremony and the Coronation — invoke Phra Narai to consecrate the king's divine right to rule.

Vedic Significance 吠陀意義

Vishnu is the second member of the Hindu Trimurti and one of the most widely worshipped deities in the world, with the Vaishnava tradition counting hundreds of millions of followers. He is described in the Puranas as having descended to Earth in ten principal avatars (Dashavatara) — including Rama, Krishna, and the Buddha — to restore cosmic order. His eternal abode, Vaikuntha, is a realm of perfect bliss, and his thousand names (Vishnu Sahasranama) are recited as one of the most sacred hymns in Hinduism.
