Five Element Planetary Theory (五行星曜論)
The Five Elements (五行) — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — form the interpretive backbone of QZSY, just as they do for BaZi and all Chinese metaphysical systems. In QZSY, each of the Seven Governors and Four Remainders carries a specific elemental assignment, and planetary interactions are interpreted primarily through the generating (生, Sheng) and overcoming (剋, Ke) cycles rather than through purely geometric aspect relationships.
Elemental Assignments
| Body | Chinese | Element | Polarity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | 太陽 | Fire | Yang |
| Moon | 太陰 | Water | Yin |
| Mercury | 水星 | Water | Yang |
| Venus | 金星 | Metal | Yin |
| Mars | 火星 | Fire | Yin |
| Jupiter | 木星 | Wood | Yang |
| Saturn | 土星 | Earth | Yang |
| Rahu | 羅睺 | Fire | Yin |
| Ketu | 計都 | Earth | Yin |
| Purple Gas | 紫氣 | Wood | Yin |
| Moon's Apogee | 月孛 | Water | Yin |
The Generating Cycle (相生)
The generating cycle describes how elements nourish and support each other: Wood generates Fire → Fire generates Earth → Earth generates Metal → Metal generates Water → Water generates Wood. When two planets in a chart are connected by the generating cycle, their interaction is fundamentally supportive. For example, a trine (三合) between Jupiter (Wood) and the Sun (Fire) is doubly beneficial because the geometric harmony of the trine is reinforced by Wood producing Fire — the two layers of meaning amplify each other.
The Overcoming Cycle (相剋)
The overcoming cycle describes how elements control and suppress each other: Wood overcomes Earth → Earth overcomes Water → Water overcomes Fire → Fire overcomes Metal → Metal overcomes Wood. When two planets are connected by the overcoming cycle, their interaction carries tension, restriction, or conflict. A square (刑) between Saturn (Earth) and Mercury (Water) is particularly challenging because the geometric tension of the square is compounded by Earth damming Water — structural restriction suppressing communication and intelligence.
Element Balance Assessment
A key interpretive step in QZSY chart analysis is assessing the overall elemental balance of the natal chart. Count how many planets fall in each element category (considering both the planet's inherent element and the element of the mansion/Ci it occupies). An excess of Fire planets suggests aggression, vitality, and potential burnout. A deficiency of Water indicates emotional drought and poor adaptability. The ideal is a balanced distribution, but perfect balance is rare — the specific imbalance reveals the native's constitutional tendencies and life themes.
Comparison with BaZi Five Element Logic
BaZi also uses Five Element interactions as its core interpretive framework, but applies them to the eight characters (Stems and Branches) of the birth pillars rather than to celestial bodies. The two systems can be used complementarily: BaZi reveals the elemental chemistry of the time-cycle, while QZSY reveals the elemental forces of the actual planets. When both systems agree on an elemental emphasis (e.g., both show excessive Fire), the interpretation gains significant confidence.
