Mundane Astrology — National & Eclipse Charts (世俗占星——國運與日月蝕)
Mundane astrology (世俗占星) applies QZSY principles to collective entities — nations, cities, dynasties, and natural phenomena — rather than individuals. This branch of QZSY has the deepest roots in Chinese astronomical tradition, predating natal astrology by centuries. The imperial astronomical bureau (欽天監, Qin Tian Jian) was primarily concerned with mundane observation: reading celestial omens for the state, predicting eclipses, and interpreting unusual planetary configurations as messages about the dynasty's mandate.
The Fen Ye System (分野)
The Fen Ye (分野, 'Field Allocation') system maps celestial regions to terrestrial territories. Each of the Twelve Ci corresponds to a specific Chinese state or province. When a planet, eclipse, or comet appears in a particular Ci, its influence is interpreted as affecting the corresponding territory:
| Ci | Territory | Modern Approximation |
|---|---|---|
| 星紀 (Xing Ji) | Wu-Yue (吳越) | Jiangsu, Zhejiang |
| 玄枵 (Xuan Xiao) | Qi (齊) | Shandong |
| 諏訾 (Zou Zi) | Wei (衛) | Hebei |
| 降婁 (Jiang Lou) | Lu (魯) | Shandong (south) |
| 大梁 (Da Liang) | Zhao (趙) | Shanxi, Hebei |
| 實沈 (Shi Chen) | Jin (晉) | Shanxi |
| 鶉首 (Chun Shou) | Qin (秦) | Shaanxi, Gansu |
| 鶉火 (Chun Huo) | Zhou (周) | Henan |
| 鶉尾 (Chun Wei) | Chu (楚) | Hubei, Hunan |
| 壽星 (Shou Xing) | Zheng (鄭) | Henan (central) |
| 大火 (Da Huo) | Song (宋) | Henan (east) |
| 析木 (Xi Mu) | Yan (燕) | Beijing, Hebei (north) |
Eclipse Analysis
Eclipses are the most powerful mundane indicators in QZSY. Solar eclipses (日蝕) were considered particularly ominous — the temporary darkening of the Sun was interpreted as a challenge to sovereign authority. Key eclipse analysis factors include:
- Ci of the eclipse: Determines which territory is affected (via Fen Ye).
- Mansion of the eclipse: Adds specificity to the prediction.
- Time of day: Morning eclipses affect the first part of the year; midday eclipses affect the middle; evening eclipses affect the end.
- Duration: Longer eclipses indicate more severe or prolonged effects.
- Planetary aspects to the eclipse point: Benefics (Jupiter, Venus) mitigate; malefics (Mars, Saturn) amplify the disruption.
Jupiter-Saturn Conjunction Cycles
The conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn, occurring approximately every 20 years, has been a primary marker of historical epochs in both Chinese and Western mundane astrology. In Chinese tradition, the conjunction's Ci position and its relationship to the reigning dynasty's foundation chart were used to assess dynastic stability and the potential for regime change.
Historical Examples
The dynastic histories (正史) contain extensive records of mundane interpretations. The Tianwen Zhi (天文志) chapters in the Han Shu, Jin Shu, Sui Shu, and other histories document centuries of celestial observations correlated with political events. These records provide invaluable material for studying the practice and evolution of Chinese mundane astrology.
