Principles of Mian Xiang Interpretation (面相詮釋原則)
Effective Mian Xiang reading requires mastery not just of the individual features and palaces but of the interpretive principles that govern how these elements combine and modify each other. These principles prevent the common error of reading features in isolation.
1. Overall Harmony (整體和諧)
No single feature determines destiny. The face must be read as an integrated whole. A strong nose (wealth capacity) with weak eyes (poor judgment) produces wealth that is poorly managed. A strong forehead (good early luck and intelligence) with a weak chin (lack of support in old age) produces a person who succeeds early but struggles to maintain gains. Overall facial harmony indicates overall life balance.
2. Color and Luster Override Structure (色澤優先)
The current Qi state (revealed through color and luster) overrides the permanent structural reading for timing purposes. A weak nose structure with excellent current luster indicates better wealth circumstances than expected right now, even if the long-term capacity is limited. This is why face readers check both structure AND luster in every reading.
3. Left-Right Asymmetry Reading
Left side (Yang) of the face reads past events, Yang forces, and the paternal line. Right side (Yin) reads current/future events, Yin forces, and the maternal line. Significant left-right asymmetry indicates unresolved polarities, potential health issues on the more developed side, or conflicts between paternal and maternal inheritance.
4. Feature Proportionality (三停五均)
Classical proportions: Three equal zones (天地人 — Heaven, Human, Earth) of equal height; eyes separated by one eye-width; nose width aligning with inner eye corners; mouth width aligning with center of irises. Departures from classical proportions affect the life domain associated with the departing feature.
5. Mole Interpretation (痣相)
Moles in auspicious palace positions amplify the palace's positive qualities; in inauspicious positions, they amplify challenges. Dark, raised moles with clean edges carry stronger effect than flat, light, or irregularly-edged moles. Hidden moles (on body, not face) are generally positive.
6. Reading for the Whole Life Arc
A complete Mian Xiang reading traces the life trajectory — reading the forehead for early life patterns, the mid-face for career and relationship patterns, and the lower face for legacy patterns — creating a narrative of the whole life arc rather than isolated snapshots.
