The Nadi System: Energy Channels (氣脈系統)
The Nadi (நாடி / 氣脈) system describes the network of subtle energy channels through which Prana (vital breath) circulates throughout the body. Classical texts enumerate 72,000 Nadis, though three principal channels — Sushumna, Ida, and Pingala — form the core framework for spiritual practice and energetic diagnosis.
The Three Principal Nadis
- Sushumna (சுழுமுனை): The central channel, running from the base of the spine (Muladhara) to the crown (Sahasrara). It is the pathway through which Kundalini Shakti ascends during awakening. Normally dormant in most individuals, it activates through specific practices (pranayama, meditation, initiation). Chinese parallel: The Taiji Pole (太極柱) — the central vertical axis in Daoist internal alchemy, and the Chong Mai (衝脈 - Penetrating Vessel) of Chinese meridian theory.
- Ida (இடகலை): The left channel, terminating at the left nostril. Carries lunar (Chandra/陰) energy — cooling, receptive, intuitive, parasympathetic. Associated with the right brain hemisphere. Chinese parallel: Yin meridians and the Ren Mai (任脈 - Conception Vessel).
- Pingala (பிங்கலை): The right channel, terminating at the right nostril. Carries solar (Surya/陽) energy — heating, active, analytical, sympathetic nervous system. Associated with the left brain hemisphere. Chinese parallel: Yang meridians and the Du Mai (督脈 - Governing Vessel).
Ida-Pingala Interweaving
Ida and Pingala weave around Sushumna in a helical pattern, crossing at each Chakra point. These crossings create the energy vortices experienced as Chakras. When the flow in Ida and Pingala is balanced (achieved through Nadi Shodhana / alternate nostril breathing), Prana enters Sushumna, activating higher consciousness. This pattern is the origin of the Caduceus symbol in Western medicine.
The 72,000 Minor Nadis
Beyond the three principal channels, 72,000 subsidiary Nadis branch throughout the body, forming the complete subtle circulatory system. Of these, 14 are considered significant in yogic texts: Sushumna, Ida, Pingala, Gandhari, Hastijihva, Kuhu, Saraswati, Pusha, Shankhini, Payasvini, Varuni, Alambusha, Vishvodhara, and Yashasvini. These distribute Prana to every cell, organ, and tissue.
Meridian System Comparison
The Chinese meridian (經絡 / Jing Luo) system identifies 12 primary meridians plus 8 extraordinary vessels, totaling 20 major channels compared to the Vedic 14 significant Nadis. Both systems describe energy flowing in defined pathways, with blockages causing disease and free flow promoting health. The key difference: Meridians have precise physical acupuncture points mapped along them, while Nadis are described more as subtle (Sukshma Sharira) structures without fixed physical landmarks.
