Kundalini: The Serpent Power (昆達里尼覺醒)
Kundalini Shakti (குண்டலினி சக்தி / 昆達里尼) is the primordial evolutionary energy described as a coiled serpent resting at the base of the spine in Muladhara Chakra. When awakened through practice, initiation, or spontaneous activation, it ascends through Sushumna Nadi, piercing each Chakra until reaching Sahasrara, where the individual consciousness (Shakti) merges with universal consciousness (Shiva). This process represents the ultimate goal of Tantric and Yogic practice.
Stages of Awakening
- 1. Arambha (Beginning): Kundalini pierces the Brahma Granthi (knot) at Muladhara. Physical sensations — heat, tingling, spontaneous movements (Kriyas). The practitioner begins to experience Prana consciously. Chinese parallel: Opening the Du Mai and Ren Mai in Small Heavenly Circuit (小周天).
- 2. Ghata (Vessel): Kundalini reaches Anahata, piercing the Vishnu Granthi (heart knot). Emotional purification intensifies — old traumas, attachments, and Samskaras surface for release. Deep compassion and devotional states arise. Chinese parallel: Cultivating Middle Dantian (中丹田), refining Qi into Shen.
- 3. Parichaya (Acquaintance): Kundalini reaches Ajna, piercing the Rudra Granthi (brow knot). Psychic faculties (Siddhis) may manifest — clairvoyance, clairaudience, subtle perception. The practitioner sees the inner light (Jyoti) and hears the inner sound (Nada). Chinese parallel: Activating Upper Dantian (上丹田), Shen Ming (神明) realization.
- 4. Nishpatti (Completion): Kundalini reaches Sahasrara. Union of Shakti and Shiva — Samadhi, non-dual awareness, dissolution of individual ego-self into cosmic consciousness. Chinese parallel: Return to Wuji (無極), the Great Heavenly Circuit (大周天).
The Three Granthis (Knots)
Three psychic knots obstruct Kundalini's ascent: Brahma Granthi (attachment to physical existence and security), Vishnu Granthi (attachment to emotional bonds and personal identity), and Rudra Granthi (attachment to psychic powers and intellectual pride). Each must be pierced for complete awakening.
Safety and Precautions
Premature or forced Kundalini awakening without proper preparation can produce severe physical and psychological disturbances — known as 'Kundalini Syndrome.' Classical texts universally emphasize the necessity of a qualified Guru, proper ethical foundation (Yama/Niyama), physical preparation (Asana/Pranayama), and gradual progressive practice. This mirrors the Chinese internal alchemy warning against 'fire deviation' (走火入魔 - Zou Huo Ru Mo) — uncontrolled energy activation causing mental and physical harm.
Relationship to Dantian Cultivation
Chinese internal alchemy (内丹 - Nei Dan) follows a parallel ascending path: transforming Jing (精) to Qi (氣) at the Lower Dantian, Qi to Shen (神) at the Middle Dantian, and Shen to Xu (虛/Void) at the Upper Dantian. While the frameworks differ in terminology and cultural context, the underlying energetic progression — from gross physical to subtle spiritual — is remarkably consistent across both traditions.
