Judgment

卦辭

大過:棟橈,利有攸往,亨。

Preponderance of the Great. The ridgepole sags to the breaking point. It furthers one to have somewhere to go. Success.

象傳

象曰:澤滅木,大過;君子以獨立不懼,遯世無悶。

The lake rises above the trees: the image of Preponderance of the Great. Thus the superior man stands alone and is unafraid, withdraws from the world without melancholy.


Interpretation

詮釋

大過卦象徵過度與非常。澤水淹沒樹木,棟樑彎曲。暗示著非常時期需要非常手段,但須慎重行事。

Excess and extraordinary times. Lake flooding trees, ridgepole bending. Suggests extraordinary times require extraordinary measures, but must act carefully.

Six at the beginning

初六

藉用白茅,無咎。

To spread white rushes underneath. No blame.

墊用白茅,無咎。過度謹慎雖繁瑣但無害,寧過勿缺。

Using white rushes as padding brings no blame. Excessive caution though tedious causes no harm, better too much than too little.

Nine in the second place

九二

枯楊生稊,老夫得其女妻,無不利。

A dry poplar sprouts at the root. An older man takes a young wife. Everything furthers.

枯楊生新芽,老夫娶少妻,無不利。起死回生,老少配合,相得益彰。

Dead poplar sprouting, old man marrying young wife, everything furthers. Resurrection, old and young complement each other, mutual benefit.

Nine in the third place

九三

棟橈,凶。

The ridgepole sags to the breaking point. Misfortune.

棟樑彎曲,凶。負荷過重不堪重負,結構崩潰在即。

Ridgepole bending, misfortune. Overloaded beyond capacity, structure about to collapse.

Nine in the fourth place

九四

棟隆,吉,有它吝。

The ridgepole is braced. Good fortune. If there are ulterior motives, it is humiliating.

棟樑高起,吉,有其他依靠則困窘。依賴外力支撐雖可但不光彩。

Ridgepole raised brings fortune, relying on others brings embarrassment. Depending on external support works but lacks dignity.

Nine in the fifth place

九五

枯楊生華,老婦得其士夫,無咎無譽。

A dry poplar blossoms. An older woman takes a young husband. No blame. No praise.

枯楊開花,老婦得少夫,無咎無譽。表面風光實則虛華,不長久。

Dead poplar flowering, old woman marrying young husband, no blame no praise. Superficially glorious but actually vain, not lasting.

Six at the top

上六

過涉滅頂,凶,無咎。

One must go through the water. It goes over one's head. Misfortune. No blame.

過度涉水淹過頭頂,凶,無咎。冒險過度雖凶但出於義無咎。

Wading too deep, water over head, misfortune but no blame. Excessive risk though dangerous, if for righteousness, no blame.
